Two new sawing systems from Addison Saws are bringing considerable benefits to manufacturing at AJ Binns, the Hertfordshire-based specialists in washroom and changing room furniture.

Committed to producing the highest quality fittings, AJ Binns has invested in a Tronzadoras TL 400A semi-automatic rising blade mitre saw and a fully automatic Tronzadoras GAA 500-90 shuttle vice saw.

“The growing demand for our washroom fittings meant it was clearly time to invest in new sawing technologies and benefit from the improvements in performance, accuracy and repeatability that they would bring to our processes,” comments Binns’ product designer, Matthew Cafferkey.

The Tronzadoras TL400A is being used to cut hook rails and seating slabs from 6063-T6 tempered aluminium in lengths of up to 6.1m. Equipped with an optional Tronzadoras TM automatic measuring system, it is accelerating production, enabling multiple components to be cut simultaneously and ensuring precise repeatability between cuts. Incorporating a handwheel operated digital display for outfeed, the automatic measuring system allows the saw to be programmed to cut lengths of up to 3m, with rapid set-ups.

The fully automatic GAA 500-90 shuttle vice saw is being used to make 20mm wide, 90° cuts in 6063-T6 tempered aluminium extrusions of up to 6.1m in length. It is significantly reducing both set-up and cutting times, and has all but eliminated the creation of waste material.

“With our old manually operated chop saw we measured then cut each component individually – a process that was very time consuming,” Mr Cafferkey adds. “The advantages the new Addison machines are providing in terms of accuracy, speed, cleaner cuts and reduced scrap are considerable.

“As our production requirements are typically customised to client needs, cutting accuracy and ease of set-up are more important to us than speed, hence we haven’t properly considered the time savings that our new saws are providing. They are, however, significantly quicker; quantities that would have perhaps previously taken a week to cut are now typically completed over the equivalent of a day and a half.”

Before placing the machine order with Addison Saws, AJ Binns considered products from a number of different suppliers. “Addison were competitive on price and quick to answer all our questions,” says Mr Cafferkey. “They demonstrated a genuine interest in our requirements and were happy to advise on the best solutions.”

“We were delighted to secure this important order from AJ Binns and help them to achieve greater efficiencies in the production of their high quality washroom furniture,” comments Addison Saws’ regional sales manager, Darren Creasey.

“For ongoing peace of mind long outside the warranty period, Binns also took out a service plan agreement with us which provides the benefits of an annual scheduled service for each saw, plus a 15% discount on spare parts and engineer visits.”

The Tronzadoras GAA 500-90 automatic shuttle vice saw for 90° cutting offers a number of features including: manual setting of the cut length via micrometer; digital setting of the number of pieces to be cut; and material out detection.

It provides a cutting length accuracies of ±0.1mm, a maximum feeder stroke of 300mm (double index 600mm), hydro-pneumatic saw blade feed and an enclosed cutting zone with interlocked hood. Also featured are secure horizontal and vertical pneumatic clamping and mist spray blade lubrication. A blade stroke limiter is provided for fast repetition cutting.

The TL 400A semi-automatic rising blade mitre saw offers many of the features of the GAA 500-90 but also provides a 180° left and right mitring (±90°) capability and a moveable fence for wider cut capacity.

This year Addison Saws celebrates 60 years at the forefront of sawing technology. The company offers an extensive range of full CNC machine tools from a number of premier industrial machine manufacturers encompassing everything from simple, manually operated machines to highly sophisticated, fully automated sawing lines and heavy-duty 3, 3+1, 4- and 5-axis long-bed multi-piece machining centres.
