Andover foundry wins Queen’s Award

Staff at MRT Castings are celebrating after winning a Queen’s Award For International Trade on Her Majesty’s 90th birthday.

Family-owned and managed MRT joined the prestigious list of UK achievers after growing export turnover by 330% over the last three years. Overseas trade now accounts for 56% of business at the aluminium die caster which last year recorded a turnover of £7.2 million.

The Hampshire company casts and machines complex engineering components for OEMs all over the world. Its main markets are the medical sector, aerospace and defence. Many of the components manufactured by MRT are life-critical or safety-critical, requiring high levels of engineering expertise.

Managing director Phil Rawnson said: “We are absolutely delighted to have received this tremendous honour – especially in Her Majesty’s 90th birthday year. Our turnover grew by 70% last year, which was both challenging and exciting. It is great to share this award with all our employees whose skill and dedication have contributed to our recent success.”

The company has grown its team and also invested heavily in new technology to help drive production. It now has four high tech pressure casting machines and 21 state of the art CNC machining centres.

The Queen’s Award is the latest and most prestigious in a string of recent accolades for MRT. Last November the company won the Cast Metals Federation Company Achievement Award for its outstanding growth, investment and diversification into new markets. That came just two weeks after MRT won the EEF South East Outstanding Export Award.

MRT was established in 1947 and has been based in Andover since 1965. It offers customers a complete end to end manufacturing service. Its solutions include design, tooling, casting, machining and finishing.

The company can also assemble, store and ship customers’ products directly to their clients – a complete and seamless outsourced service. Export destinations for its products include Ireland, Germany, France, Poland, Hungary and the USA.
