124 manufacturing trainees are being recruited by British Steel in Scunthorpe. 60 of the appointments have already been made – half of who started work in December 2017 and half have joined in January 2018.

The company is now looking to find an additional 64 manufacturing trainees who’ll also be trained to perform roles including crane driving, fork lift truck driving and machine operations.

British Steel deputy CEO Paul Martin said: “We’re delighted to continue recruiting, underlining our commitment to investing in our people, our products and our future. These are excellent jobs, offering successful applicants first-class training and career prospects along with a good wage.

“Earlier this year we started recruiting this site’s first manufacturing trainees in a decade and they’re already making a significant contribution to our business. I’d like to welcome our new employees to the business and look forward to more people joining us in the coming weeks and months.”

The new trainees will be based in manufacturing areas across our Scunthorpe site and be directly involved in producing the company’s annual 2.8 million tonne steel output.

The salary for the roles starts at £19,000 plus shift allowance (where applicable) in year one, progressing to circa £22,000 plus shift allowance (where applicable) in year 2, following successful completion of training.

British Steel senior resourcing advisor Lucy Lings said: “These roles are incredibly important to our business and they represent a fantastic opportunity for people wanting to quickly advance their careers, with training provided by ourselves and North Lindsey College.

“The standard of applications we receive continues to be high and our new manufacturing trainees have all come through a rigorous recruitment process. I’d encourage anyone interested in joining British Steel as a manufacturing trainee to get their application in as soon as possible.”

Candidates must be aged 18 and over as this is a legal requirement in order to be able to work shifts. They will also be expected to have a full and valid driving licence, excellent communication skills and the ability to work well within a team environment.

North Lindsey College Principal Mick Lochran said: “These roles offer people a unique chance to build new careers with the region’s largest employer, and we’re delighted to be working in partnership with British Steel on delivering the training.”
