The increased machining capacity of the new Mazak Integrex e-650H II multi-tasking machine tool makes it the ideal machine for a wide range of industries.

The increased machining capacity of the new Mazak Integrex e-650H II multi-tasking machine tool – the first e-machine with a 6,000mm between centres distance – makes it the ideal machine for a wide range of industries, including aerospace, construction, off road and energy.

Unveiled at EMO Milan, the e-650H II was seen undertaking a machining demonstration that took in features typical of components in its target markets, such as oil and gas, aerospace, and land transportation. The demonstration, which included gear cutting as well as conventional turning and milling, highlighted the agility of the machine tool, with its 45kW, 1,000rpm, 6,320Nm main spindle and 37kW, 10,000rpm milling spindle combined with a B axis that provides full 5-axis contouring and 240° of rotation in 0.0001° increments, as well as being able to position itself 30°over the centre line of the machine's Z axis.

As part of Mazak's flagship Done-in-One range of multi-tasking machine tools, the Integrex e-650H II is capable of providing many machining processes, including turning, milling and drilling, plus deep hole boring and gear hobbing. The scale of the machine's Z axis, which ranges from 2.3m to 6m in length, often requires extra long boring bars or drills to be used which are located in the machine's automatic boring bar stocker, which can handle tools up to 1m in length.

Additionally, the U axis option allows cutting tools to move in a direction perpendicular to the spindle centreline which enables the diameter being machined by the tool to change during cutting (U axis tool required). This is said to be particularly popular in oil and gas applications.

To support workpieces up to 6m in length the e-650H is available with two independent NC steady rests and a NC tailstock. The number 80 taper tailstock, which supersedes the previous ‘drag-and-drop' type, can be quickly positioned and its pressure can be accurately controlled. It has a maximum thrust of 70kN, and when combined with the 600mm chuck, the machine can support a component weighing up to 7,000kg.

Overall machine control is provided by the sixth generation Mazatrol Matrix CNC, giving the option for both conversational and EIA/ISO programming languages to be used. The power of the control system, with its twin engine 64 bit processors, enables full use of the machine's multi-axis contouring capabilities and fine 0.0001mm minimum increment linear inputs. Additionally, the 8 MB of data storage within the control improves machine performance and eliminates the drip feed of data over a company's network.

With the Mazatrol Matrix control comes a range of intelligent machine functions to ensure that the machine tool maintains its optimum performance in terms of long term accuracy and problem free operation over extended periods. These features include Active Vibration Control – a function that looks ahead in the CNC program and establishes optimum acceleration/deceleration parameters during changes in machine directions. This effectively controls machine vibration, leading to smoother transitions, better surface finishes, and longer tool life.

The Mazak Intelligent Safety Shield provides realistic 3D simulation of the machining area, including spindle, workholding and tooling. As a result of this feature, set-ups are quicker and safer as, while in manual mode, the machine movements are monitored and, should a potential collision be identified, all axis movement is stopped automatically.

Mazak Voice Advisor is another safety orientated feature that verbally informs operators which switches or buttons have been selected during manual operation and, under certain circumstances, will issue warnings if manual operation could lead to machine collisions or malfunctions. The result is that, while in manual mode, particularly during set-up, the process is as smooth and trouble free as possible.
