Complete solutions for efficient manufacturing

In times of economic instability, there is a high demand for solutions that help manufacturers reduce processing costs and total cost of ownership.

Responding to that demand at EMO, MAG presented a number of productivity innovations including new machines to support concepts and tailored system solutions. The MAG Hüller Hille NBH machine brand represents a long tradition of high quality, robust and productive horizontal machining centres.

Now available in a vertical main spindle, MAG introduced the first model from the new NBV series in Milan – the NBV 400. Apart from its small footprint, one of the machine's most striking characteristics is its modular design, which comprises a fixed table for 3-axis machining, tilting table (A axis) for 4-axis machining and a rotary/tilting table (C on A axis) for simultaneous 5-axis milling.

The NBV can be configured for a wide range of machining requirements, and is said to be ideal for die and mould, aerospace, medical, general machining or job shop sectors. Linear guideways on the X, Y and Z axes provide ideal machine dynamics independent from the weight of the workpiece which results in traverse rates up to 60m/minute and acceleration up to 6m/s² for high performance machining and productivity. Innovative design work has eliminated hydraulics and hydraulic oil from the NBV 400.

Tools are clamped by disc springs and unclamped pneumatically – reducing operating costs and energy consumption. In addition, MAG presented another technology premiere with the VDM 1000 from MAG Hessapp – a new vertical turn/mill centre designed for heavy and large parts required by the aerospace industry or wind turbine manufacturers. The multi-tasking machine features 5-axis machining capabilities, a parallel main drive, Y and B axis extension and an extra spindle for turning, boring and milling.

The work area and measurements allow for workpiece dimensions up to 1,400m height and 1,450 swing diameter. With powerful drives, the VDM achieves high metal removal rates while the modular design allows for a wide variety of applications. The spindle torque motor produces 25,000Nm, with traverse rates on the X axis up to 25m/minute and the machine's sub 10 second tool change time improves productivity. The tool magazine can store up to 64 HSK100 taper tools.

MAG claims that green technology is not just a marketing slogan for the company for MAG, but part of the specifications and regulations for the development process. One of the developments – the ‘Ecomode' automatically levels speed and acceleration to provide an ideal balance of performance and energy consumption. While machining, the actual energy consumption and energy saving settings are displayed on a monitor.

Additionally, the machines can be equipped with integrated CAM support to check CNC programs for new workpieces on a virtual machine online. Studies have shown that significant time and energy savings can be achieved with program simulation.

AT EMO, MAG's service and support organisation presented its broad range of maintenance, productivity and logistics solutions, introducing its new Cyclo series of coolants and tools. Corcom has already gained a reputation as MAG's core technology group for precision components, providing plug-and-produce modules and in Milan, Corcom presented new high performance spindles, rotary tables and tool management systems.

The common denominator for all technologies in the MAG stable is energy efficiency. It is vital for manufacturers to save costs in the present economic situation – and energy savings go straight to the bottom line.

“Energy reduction is going to become more and more important in the future,” says Martin Winterstein, responsible for marketing at MAG. “We are one of the leading international machine tool companies supplying the automotive, truck and aerospace industries, as well as the heavy industrial, energy and general machining sectors. These key industries are going to face increasingly restrictive environmental regulations, and we will deliver solutions that help master these challenges,” he concludes.
