18 July 2024 Production Engineering Solutions pesmedia.com MACHINING CENTRES Travelling column machine from DMG Mori is big news Victor machines from GM CNC are widely accepted as some of the most robust, reliable and productive machine tools in their class. Now, the Oldham-based company is introducing the latest innovation from Victor – the new generation Vcenter NH5000 4-axis horizontal machining centre. Ideal for machining large parts up to 800mm in diameter by 1m high, the spacious new HMC offers productivity, highly efficient kinematics and flexibility – all credit to the exceptionally stable foundations of the machine. As a 13,000kg powerhouse, the Vcenter NH5000 has been designed from the ground up with highly dynamic cutting in mind. For example, Victor has re-designed the column to locate the support closer to the cutting head to increase rigidity and machining performance. Additionally, the T-shape structure with a slant-style column has removed weight and inertia, creating a machining head that is faster, more nimble and more responsive than previous machines. This also facilitates faster tool and pallet changeovers, which is demonstrated by a tool change of three seconds and a pallet change time of just 6.5 seconds. From a specification perspective, the Vcenter NH5000 has X-, Y- and Z-axis travels of 800 x 700 x 800mm with rapid feed rates of 48m/ minute in all axes. With 45mm diameter ballscrews on all axes and 55/45/45mm roller-type linear motion guideways, the stability of the machine is guaranteed. Likewise, the direct drive 12,000rpm 18kW spindle with dual low and high winding showcases excellent rigidity and stability with its BBT-40 BigPlus face and taper dual contact spindle system that extends tool life by minimising vibration. This spindle taper connects to a chain-type tool magazine that offers 40 tool positions as standard with 60 or 90 tools as an optional feature. The automatic pallet change system incorporates two 500 by 500mm pallets that are hydraulically driven with a chipto-chip time of 11 seconds. The B-axis incorporates four ground cones with air blow through as well as taper pins and bushes that provide rotational positioning within 1°. Optionally, customers can select hydraulic ports through the B-axis pallets and a CNC pallet that offers a positional accuracy of 0.001°. Supplied as standard with a FANUC 0i-MF Plus CNC that has a 10.4-inch screen and manual guide with 2GB CF card, the control system offers Victor’s GUI (VSS macros), ECO design for tool calibration, alarm DMG Mori has added a 4/5-axis, travelling-column machining centre with a working volume of more than 4.6m³ to the upper end of its swivelling-spindle-head DMF range. It can be integrated into a user’s digital infrastructure and is compatible with the manufacturer’s exclusive technology cycles, such as incycle gear skiving or grinding, which run in either the Celos with Siemens or Heidenhain control. Compared to the previous machine model that has been superseded, the DMF 400|11 is nearly one-third larger in capacity as well as being 20% stiffer to enable more precise, vibration-free operation. An optional partition wall creates two separate workspaces for pendulum machining, allowing set-up of the next workpiece while the previous part is being produced. Stable machining performance is largely a result of a massive cast iron bed and three cooled linear guideways in the X-axis over which the column moves. In a double ballbar test, the DMF 400|11 achieves an accuracy of 5µm, making the machine ideal for producing large moulds, dies and tools, as well as precision structural parts within the machine’s 4,000 x 1,100 x 1,050mm working envelope. The fixed table accepts components weighing up to eight tonnes for 3- or 4-axis machining of large components. One or two flush rotary C-axis tables may be integrated for fully interpolative 5-axis machining, each capable of supporting components weighing 1,200kg, while a torque table option is offered for demanding mill-turn applications.
