Expansion plans

Dörries Scharmann Technologie GmbH (DST) says it is now one of the few European owned companies playing a leading role in the world's premier league of heavy-duty machine tool manufacturers.

Precision, cost-effectiveness and reliability are the qualities on which the company, headquartered in Mönchengladbach, is focused. Having gained decades of experience in the construction of heavy-duty machine tools through the Dörries, Droop & Rein, Scharmann, and Berthiez divisions, the company is looking to expand its market presence in the heavy-duty machining sector further through an association with Italian machine tool manufacturer, Mecof.

With this in mind the company has invested in new production facility at the Droop & Rein site in Bielefeld, where the company will not only build ram type boring mills and portal and gantry milling machines up to 16m in height and a floor area of 8m in width and 40m in length, but also vertical turning machines with drilling, milling or grinding units and table diameters of up to 12m. Visitors to the recent EMO exhibition in Milan were able to see firsthand the MecMill Plus heavy-duty machining centre on the company' stand.

The new production and assembly facility in Bielefeld measures 120m x 28m x 23m, was inaugurated in June 2009 and designed specifically for the manufacture of heavy-duty machines from the DST product range. The size and the floor foundations of the hall, combined with an overhead crane capacity of up to 80 tonnes, means that any currently conceivable size of machine tool can be built here. Typical orders for heavy-duty machine tools currently in DST's build program are destined for applications as diverse as large diesel engine component manufacture, turbines and gearboxes, and propellers as well as components for power plants and wind power generation.

The maximum axis traverses on the MecMill Plus are 30,000mm x 1,600mm x 4,000 mm (XYZ) and the main drive up to 52kW and a maximum torque of 1,200Nm guarantees a high level of productivity. An automatic head changer is deployed to select the required milling head, such as the universal milling head with 38kW output, 1,000Nm torque at up to 6,000rpm.

The universal head is fully programmable with each axis achieving a positioning resolution of 0.001° with the fluid cooling system in the milling head guaranteeing a high continuous output rate without any thermal effects. Coolant is available as both flood coolant around the cutter and through the tool directly. The machine features high rigidity, thermal stability and dynamics with the machine base, columns and the crossbeams manufactured from hardened and tempered steel. The welded structures are computer designed using the Finite element method.
