Alternative Precision Sheet Metal (APSM), founded in 1997 by Brian Dumbarton, has built a reputation for personal service and establishing close partnerships with its customer base.

Mr Dumbarton originally gained a wealth of experience as an apprentice for Stannah Stairlifts and subsequently realised his ambition of establishing a specialist sheet metal company, based in Swansea. In 2014, Mr Dumbarton’s son Daniel joined the team as production manager, and being qualified in design and technology, embarked on a re-branding exercise, including a new logo, website and liveried vehicles.

“Having built up a loyal customer base and focusing on our willingness to achieve our clients’ deadlines, a program of controlled expansion, including further investment, is taking APSM onto the next phase,” Daniel Dumbarton explains.

“At APSM we feel that continual investment in the latest technology is imperative to stay at the forefront of our industry and having worked with Worcester-based Yamazaki Mazak previously, we had no hesitation in investing in the technologically advanced Mazak Nexus 6kW Fiber laser machine.

“From experience, we know that Mazak machines are very reliable and well built. In addition, we receive excellent technical advice and support from their service personnel.”

He continues: “The Nexus Fiber laser has a maximum workpiece size of 1,525mm x 3,050mm with a repeatability in X-, Y-, Z-axes of ±0.03mm which helps reduce waste and costs. Speeds have increased dramatically and we are now capable of cutting non-ferrous metals such as brass and copper in thicknesses of up to 12mm without any defects or burrs.”

“The combination of the fibre laser, our skilled team and experience, our capacity and efficiency has increased our workload markedly.”

The versatility of this machine has enabled APSM to offer additional processes, therefore opening up new markets. From small batch to large volume manufacture and by maximising the machine's capabilities, quality and consistency can be achieved.

APSM’s capabilities also include design and design for manufacture via a team of trained staff fully conversant with SolidWorks design software, ensuring a smooth transition from concept to finished product. The company is currently working on a number of projects for a broad range of clients and due to recent investments, is embracing the need for change in this current climate.

Daniel Dumbarton concludes: “Since joining APSM and having been involved with the planning and investment into the new laser machine from day one, my enthusiasm for maximising it’s potential is paramount. I am also very impressed with the ongoing support from Mazak UK.”
