Going south

The Southern Manufacturing and Electronics Show will be held at Farnborough's FIVE exhibition hall this year. It runs on February 13-14. Solutions previews some of the exhibitors at this year's event.

Under Pressure Bystronic is set to launch for the first time in the UK its electrically driven press brake machine, the Xcite 80 E, at Southern Manufacturing.

Traditionally, press brake machines are powered hydraulically, but Bystronic claims the electrically powered Xcite 80 E raises the bar by producing more parts and completing jobs in quicker time than other press brakes, whilst using less power.

Not only bending faster than a hydraulic press brake due to the modern drive system, the Xcite is equipped with the Bystronic hydraulic tool clamping system for rapid set-up times, flexible fast back gauge system and simple machine operation.

The Force Dynamic Drive (FDD) system provides speed, power and constant pressure along the entire bending length whilst also ensuring that minimal deflections occur in both the upper and lower beam. The Xcite 80 E bends to within a tolerance of ±25 arc minutes and has repeatability of ±0.0025mm.

Small but flexible machining

A VM10 vertical machining centre and a TM6 CNC lathe will be under power on the Hurco stand at Southern Manufacturing.

The company reports that a large amount of flexible productivity can be derived from a small space on a shop floor due to the compactness of these machine tools. Within a footprint of nominally 1.8m by 1.6m, the VM10 offers a working volume of 660mm x 406mm x 508mm – said to be one of the best ratios of any VMC on the market. A 20 station swing arm toolchanger and 24m/minute rapids help to minimise non-cutting time, while a 762mm by 406mm table with a maximum weight capacity of 340kg and an 11kW/73.6Nm spindle contribute to a comprehensive package. The TM6 slant bed turning centre also has a small footprint for its specification which includes a six inch chuck and a maximum cutting diameter of 316mm. Distance between centres is 403mm.

Quality control will be high on the agenda on the Vision Engineering stand as the company demonstrates its new HD digital inspection system and CamZ handheld digital inspection magnifier.

The company will also be demonstrating its full range of measurement microscopes, ranging from high resolution video measuring systems to high accuracy optical measuring microscopes, all with new software which is innovative, yet easy to use.

Right on track

When it comes to cutting metal, especially in prototype and low volume applications, XYZ Machine Tools offers a cost-effective route to increasing productivity and reducing costs.

The company's CNC/manual and full CNC machines – ranging from ProtoTRAK equipped CNC/manual mills and lathes to machining centres, turning centres and large capacity CNC oil country lathes – are specifically designed to be easy to program and quick to set-up.

The latest offering is the 15hp/8,000rpm LPM (Lean Production Machine), XYZ's first ProtoTRAK CNC machine tool to be fitted with an automatic tool changer. This new design has several features that differentiate it from a standard vertical machining centre – one being that ProtoTRAK is programmed easily using plain English prompts.

Also on the stand will be an XYZ Compact Turn 52 turning centre equipped with the Siemens 828D CNC.
