Bridgnorth-based casting specialist Grainger & Worrall (GW) is manufacturing the main engine castings for a 300hp diesel outboard marine engine.

Said to be a world-first in marine engine manufacturing, the engine’s developer and manufacturer Cox Powertrain says GW was chosen for its ability to deliver flexible programmes in a short timescale with precise quality control.

The CXO300 diesel outboard engine is a 4.4L, twin turbocharged V8. It offers increased durability over petrol variants and up to 25% improved fuel efficiency, making it ideal for a range of applications including commercial vessels, leisure and sea rescue.

“We are delighted to be identified by Cox Powertrain as the ideal partner for its incredible new diesel engine project,” said Matthew Grainger, Grainger & Worrall director.

“The cylinder heads and both upper and lower crankcase will be produced by Grainger & Worrall as the first series production contract for these four significant engine castings. The innovative casting technologies employed by our company make us the ideal supplier for Cox Powertrain’s ambitious programme, which requires its first engine casting deliveries to be made by year end. Our agile, flexible approach is the perfect solution for manufacturers and suppliers working to short timescales who require reduced lead-times without jeopardising quality control.”

GW has developed a number of innovative casting technologies that are designed to accelerate the time to market of new products by reducing prototype production times and which are supported by its digital simulation, small- to medium-scale manufacturing and engineering capabilities.

For example, digital sand manufacture, which is an additive manufacturing process, fuses grains of sand using a traditional printing technique to provide a faster, more flexible production process.

The company has also recently invested in a third, larger scale CT scanner to ensure absolute quality control of all manufactured components, bringing GW’s total investment in CT to over £1.2 million.

“Achieving any world-first requires the support of the best suppliers and all of Cox’s suppliers are carefully evaluated on their abilities. With a product in such high demand as the CXO300, it is important for Cox to partner with a supplier who can provide us with high quality, precision engine castings in the timescales and volumes required” says Duncan Green, Head of Procurement for Cox. “With Grainger & Worrall continuing to invest in technologies and techniques that enhance its current capabilities and with a long & proven track record of delivering similar products in to other premium OEMs, it makes the ideal supplier for Cox Powertrain.”

GW will be producing 70 engine sets per week for Cox Powertrain, which will be distributing through its networks in North America, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, the Far East and Australia.

Grainger & Worrall is at the forefront of castings development and innovation, with close to 75 years of experience in the sector.

Based in Bridgnorth at purpose-built facilities, the company works closely with OEMs to develop lightweight yet strong components for the automotive, marine, heavy-duty and off-road sectors. It is playing a significant role in improving the performance and efficiency of race cars in a number of the world’s top motorsport series.

GW services encompass up-front engineering, precision machining and consultancy which is backed by real science, right from the very early stages of the supply and development chain. By making its own tooling and embracing cutting edge rapid prototyping technologies, Grainger & Worrall can take a customer’s component concept through development and verification to production with remarkably short lead and response times.
