Grinding choices

The Jones & Shipman Suprema cylindrical grinding machine can be specified with a host of options to enable it to be tailored to production or toolroom requirements

Available in 90° approach or in a universal, swivelling wheelhead configuration with the incorporation of an internal grinding spindle, the Jones & Shipman Suprema cylindrical grinding machine can be specified with high speed 63m/second wheel speed and a host of options to enable it to be tailored to production or toolroom requirements.

Available through Leicester-based Jones & Shipman, the Suprema range covers three versions based on length grinding capacities of 650mm, 1,000mm or 1,500mm each with a maximum grinding diameter of 300mm.

Each machine uses Fanuc multi-axis control and touchscreen with twin membrane operating panels utilising J&S' fast to set ‘Easy' self-teach suite of programming software. The software will comfortably accommodate one diameter, single component or a series of linked features to meet multi-diameter and multi-face grinding requirements for batch production.

Constructed on a single ‘tee bed' casting with hand scraped twin vee and flat slideways, there is a choice of a universal swivelling wheelhead with air cushion and pneumatic clamping or straight 90° approach. With the universal wheelhead left hand wheels up to 350mm diameter by 50mm wide and right hand wheels up to 300mm diameter by 25 mm can be mounted. The grinding spindle is powered by 4.2kW drive giving a surface speed of 33m/second. Also incorporated on the wheelhead is a 16,500rpm internal grinding spindle capable of grinding bores between 10mm and 80mm diameter powered by belt from a 2.2 kW motor.

Should the 90° approach wheelhead option be specified, wheels up to 450mm diameter by 50mm can be used with speed rating of 45 or 63 m/second from a 7.5kW drive. Constant wheel speed is programmable.

Live and dead centre workheads with -15° to 90° swivel are included in the universal machine and dead centre type in the fixed head. A variable speed drive with direct programming between zero and 660rpm or constant surface speed can be programmed and a plain or taper correction tailstock is available to accept component loads up to 100kg between centres. Respective table swivels are ± 9°, ± 8.2° and ±5° on the 650, 1000 and 1500 machine versions.

The Fanuc control is interfaced with two ergonomically positioned control panels – the left with Z-axis manual control via pulse generator while the right hand panel has a pulse generator and X-axis digital readout. The flexible icon-based user interface is able to maintain up to 20 linked grinding cycles in its automatic operational mode.

Wheel dressing can be automatic or manual with fully compensated dressing of straight or complex profiles and extra grind cycles for thread or peel grinding, taper traverse and contouring are available. Shoulder diameter and gap elimination is also available as an option as well as shoulder probing and automatic or semi-automatic wheel balancing.
