Head over to the hub

Sandvik Coromant, will use MACH 2014 to showcase a number of new and recently introduced product innovations

Cutting tool and tooling systems specialist, , with specific focus on the company's new turning grades and Inveio technology.

The company will also major on a number of component solutions at the exhibition, particularly for the aerospace and oil and gas industries. Sandvik Coromant has deep knowledge and insight into the various metal cutting challenges of different sectors and as a result strives to develop tooling solutions in cooperation with end users to meet current and future industry demands.

Due to the quantity of recent tooling products and component solutions brought to market by Sandvik Coromant, Smart Hub 5660 in Hall 5 will carry the theme ‘What will you discover?' This is intended to encourage visitors to find out more about the benefits behind the tools and solutions on display.

Arguably most prominent among the products in the MACH spotlight will be GC4325, a new generation coated cemented carbide grade for steel turning. The advances with GC4325 help users resist holding back on cutting data levels thanks to the grade's ability to retain an intact edge line and boost process security. As many customers are already discovering, an average productivity increase of 30% is achievable in comparison with existing insert technology.

High performance turning grades

Following the successful introduction of GC4325 in October 2013, MACH 2014 visitors will discover that Sandvik Coromant has now extended this assortment by adding new grades GC4315 and GC3330. While GC4325 is the first choice for steel turning, when this grade reaches a limit in metal removal rate due to high-speed and long time in cut, GC4315 withstands the higher cutting temperatures that occur. GC3330 is the first choice grade for milling cast iron materials.

The common denominator between all three grades is Inveio unidirectional crystal orientation, a technology that brings endurance, predictability and long tool life to the machining process. Normally, the crystal orientation in CVD alumina coating is random but Sandvik Coromant has found a way to control the crystals, making them all line up in the same direction – towards the top surface. These tightly packed crystals create a strong barrier towards the cutting zone and chip and the result is grades with excellent wear resistance and cutting edges that remain intact for longer.

More innovation

Other highlights from Sandvik Coromant at the show will include CoroCut QD, an established system for deep grooving and parting-off with long overhangs, which is now expanded through inserts and durable tools featuring over and under coolant.

The instantly recognisable Sandvik Coromant yellow coat team will also be on hand at MACH to discuss any specific requirements. Of particular emphasis at the show will be the company's Machine Investment support service. Machine Investment is a proven step by step approach designed to save time, trouble and money. It defines, in both technical and commercial terms, the end user's needs and the new opportunities that investment can bring. A Sandvik Coromant team is created to work closely with the customer and the machine manufacturer and agent to ensure that these requirements are realistic and achieved. In fact, all key specialist players are involved at the earliest possible stage.

Many customers have been able to reduce the cost of producing a component after Sandvik Coromant presented alternative solutions for tools and programming. Based on many typical Machine Investment cases, manufacturers can start making profit from day one, can increase productivity by 15% or more, and can reduce payback time by 12-15 months.

Supporting the next generation

Learning about services such as Machine Investment will be a key theme on the Sandvik Coromant Smart Hub. Indeed, education will be in the spotlight throughout the show, particularly as Sandvik Coromant has reinforced its commitment to student engineers by becoming the principal sponsor of the MACH 2014 Education and Training Zone.

The Education and Training Zone is dedicated to student visitors interested in engineering-based manufacturing and associated technologies. It is used as a focal point to engage with the education sector as well as provide an interesting visitor attraction in its own right. It is hoped that the Education and Training Zone will inspire, prepare and motivate the next generation of British engineers.
