Industry support

Perfect Bore was formed in 1988 and the first seven years of business life was spent servicing general gundrilling and honing requirements across varied industries.

Its first foray into motorsport applications was in 1995 when the company was approached to supply coated cylinder liners to a major F1 team. Several years of consistent growth led to the company setting up a separate division to supply cylinder liners, pistons, the honing of engine blocks and associated valve train components to several F1 teams and other motorsport series' such as Indy and kart.

The company was sold to Dover Incorporated in 2001 where it became part of Performance Motorsport Inc. The engineering division still had strong motorsport links at this time providing gundrilling, honing and superfinishing services to numerous customers.

The engineering division was sold off to one of its former and original owners in 2004 as Dover concentrated on its core competences. By this time liner manufacture and motorsport services had peaked and started to fall dramatically due to the engine configuration changes in the F1 rule book.

As a separate entity, Perfect Bore Manufacturing has continued to expand and support motorsport applications. The company introduced single tube BTA drilling systems and enhanced its gundrilling, honing and CNC turning capabilities. In particular Perfect Bore has supported the development of coating processes and their application within the motorsport and commercial markets. Hard anodising, electroless nickel and plasma nitriding processes all require detailed preparation of bores prior to coating. Perfect Bore has developed processes to provide motorsport users with ‘right first time' solutions to their bore problems.

Today Perfect Bore is accredited to AS9100 and is a dedicated signatory to SC21. Whilst these commitments are centred around aerospace markets, the company reports that the benefits are also relevant to customers in other sectors such as motorsport, oil and gas, nuclear, defence and commercial.

In terms of capability, Perfect Bore's portfolio is extensive and includes: bore production and finishing from 1.50mm diameter to 150mm diameter up to 3000mm overall length (larger bores can also be accommodated on dedicated single tube BTA boring machines; gundrilling from 1.50mm up to 40mm diameter through 450mm to 2000mm long billets on centreline drilling machines and 2.50mm up to 40mm diameter on indexable table machines; temperature controlled honing facilities covering both horizontal and vertical machines with capacity from 1.50mm up to 200mm and; superfinishing capacity covering 6mm diameter to 60mm diameter.

Parts with bore tolerances of 0.001mm accuracy are achievable and finishes of 0.05Ra.
