Global engineering company Renishaw has announced a significant programme of student recruitment for summer 2011, offering a mix of graduate jobs, apprenticeships, one year industrial placements and summer placements, totalling some 125 positions. The company is additionally inviting applications from students at local schools for 40 one week work experience opportunities.

Amongst the opportunities are 25 jobs for graduates in a range of engineering disciplines including electronics, software, optics and mechanical engineering, plus people with good degrees in mathematics and physics. There are also 15 four year craft and technical apprenticeships on offer, and five specialist software apprenticeships.

Speaking about the current UK opportunities, Peter Bowler, Renishaw's group human resources manager said: “With a shortage of engineering talent we have to take control of our own destiny and develop high quality individuals to meet our future growth targets. We offer excellent careers for graduates and students with the right capabilities and attitude, and the fact that we make most products in the UK and offer opportunities for overseas experience is an added attraction for people looking to become well rounded engineers.”

Renishaw has a strong history of developing its own talent, with a sponsored undergraduate student programme that dates back to the mid 1980s and an apprenticeship scheme that has been running for more than 30 years. Many of the company's divisional directors and general managers are graduates of these schemes, and Gareth Hankins, director of Renishaw's Manufacturing Services Division, joined the company as an apprentice aged 16.

The graduate and student positions are in addition to over 200 permanent vacancies currently available within the Renishaw Group, of which around 100 are for roles at the company's four main sites in Gloucestershire, UK.
