New cutting fluid offers responsible performance

When it comes to machining fluids, manufacturers are spoilt for choice. From straight oils and soluble oils to semi- and fully synthetic fluids, there are options to suit a variety of requirements.

Fluid selection is an important decision; it can impact output quality, production rates, efficiency and workplace safety. Often, it is a case of compromise with various trade-offs to be made between cooling, lubrication, efficiency and versatility. Kluthe, the global surface treatment specialist, says it has turned this idea on its head by developing a working fluid without compromise.

Following significant investment and the analysis of precision machining fluid requirements, Kluthe has produced the highly optimised Hakufluid. The Hakufluid range of cooling lubricants are fully synthetic, water-based and transparent metalworking fluids that combine the advantages of non-water miscible working fluids with those of water-miscible fluids, allowing for optimal cooling and lubrication simultaneously.

“Hakufluid provides superior performance and improved efficiency – all while being far safer for the operator and the environment,” explains Joe Gibson, business development manager, Kluthe UK. “In almost any processing application Hakufluid outperforms other fluids – its increasing popularity has seen it successfully used in many demanding industrial sectors. It is also an efficient fluid with less required to achieve optimum results.”

Hakufluid achieves equivalent or superior results with 30% less consumption than oil emulsions while carry-out with the chips is minimised. It also allows for a much cleaner surface finish on machined components and provides easy degreasing with demulsifying properties. The fluid’s wetting characteristics can significantly improve tool life by reducing tool abrasion – in turn minimising tool wear, extending service life and helping to lower overall production costs.

When the development team at Kluthe began working on what would eventually become Hakufluid, it was decided that skin-compatibility, safe handling and a clean working environment were matters of priority.

As such Hakufluid is free from boron, formaldehyde and oil, it is both touch-safe and nature conscious – adhering to Kluthe’s longstanding commitment to sustainability. Its water-based formulation, which requires deionised water, also means that there is no oil mist during machining, making it far safer for operators than oil emulsions of equivalent performance.

Hakufluid is versatile and can be used in a wide range of metalworking processes, including those with defined and undefined cutting edges. Processes with a defined cutting edge include turning, milling drilling, thread cutting, tapping broaching and deep drilling. Those with an undefined edge are flat grinding, cylindrical grinding, internal grinding, belt grinding, power honing, profile grinding, groove grinding and gear grinding.

It provides excellent corrosion protection to exposed machined surfaces and is compatible with bronze, brass, steel, stainless steel, aluminium and cast iron.
