Let's rock

Micro Metalsmiths has recently completed work on a rapid prototyping project for I-pix, a leading LED lighting fixtures manufacturer for the entertainment and architectural industries.

North Yorkshire-based

The project involved Micro Metalsmiths developing high quality engineered castings for a housing to be used on a new high power LED based lighting system.

Micro Metalsmiths developed the housing working closely in conjunction with the I-Pix design team, who had produced a model of the product to check heat dissipation requirements. From the rapid prototype aluminium part, the company machined and assembled the solution with prototype electronics. Thermal testing was then successfully carried out to provide the final result. The prototype allowed I-pix to verify calculations and to check the complete fit of the solution prior to proceeding into production.

In today's market cost-effective product development can be a key asset in assisting companies gain competitive advantage and when compared to other processes such as pressure casting, rapid prototyping can help companies achieve this by saving time and money.

Many of I-Pix's products spend a lifetime travelling around the world and need to be technically robust. The company has developed LED lighting solutions that have gone on tour with some of the world's most famous bands including: Radiohead, Depeche Mode, Oasis and The Killers.

Christopher Ewington, managing director, at Pix said: “Before choosing Micro Metalsmiths we took great care in selecting the most suitable process and foundry. We needed to ensure that whichever company we chose understood the importance of delivering a high quality, timely and cost-effective solution. We were not disappointed – the service and support we received from Micro Metalsmiths was excellent.”
