Look sharp

Vollmer claims it has taken the sharpening of gang saw blades to a new level of speed and precision with the recent introduction of its new CAG200 gang saw sharpening machine.

Incorporating advanced grinding technology with an intelligent control system, the CAG200 is designed specifically for processing gang saw blades up to 200mm.

Packed into the robust enclosure is an economically attractive machine concept that combines flexibility, precision and ease of use within a highly productive sharpening machine. The principle of the new CAG200 sees a grinding head moved by two CNC controlled axes over the saw blade, which is clamped over the entire surface. This permits the sequential grinding of each tooth in a single clamping arrangement.

Like many of the new Vollmer grinding solutions, the CAG200 is ergonomically manufactured with operator ease of use at the forefront of the design process. This design philosophy sees the CAG200 provide a 10 inch colour LCD display on a swivel mounted panel, a generous viewing window and a large door to simplify blade loading for the operator.

Unlike many other machines in the marketplace, the CAG200 sees Vollmer introduce a completely new generation of machine technology. Whilst alternate manufacturers move the saw blade, the CAG200 clamps the whole blade for the 2-axis grinding head to move along the blade. The 2-axis head permits the processing of the tooth pitch, height and shape – a technique that minimises vibration, improves surface finishes and guarantees a consistently high quality and precision level over the length of the complete saw blade.

The manufacturing philosophy of the CAG200 further enhances surface finishes and consistency with a clamping design that will hold the blade as close as 2mm below the grinding point. The clamping support also enables higher stock removal rates for increased productivity and reduced cycle times.

To generate faster production cycles, the CAG200 also has a powerful grinding motor that drives a large grinding wheel for optimum results. To maintain tooth quality and precision when conducting high stock removal rates, the CAG200 can be used as a wet grinding machine.

Capable of processing saw blades from 60 to 200mm with a grinding wheel diameter capacity up to 350mm, and suitable for machining blades from 1.4 to 2.6mm thick with a tooth length from 800 to 1,500mm and a pitch from 15 to 40mm, the CAG200 caters for all possibilities.

To process blades in this dimension range, the machine includes a 2.2kW motor that drives the grinding wheel at 45m/second. To deliver stability when machining at such high material removal rates, Vollmer has provided a heavy-duty base that takes the machine weight to a sturdy 2,300kg. This is packed into a footprint of 995mm deep by 2,760mm wide by 1,940mm high. Conceived as the true all-rounder for processing gang saws, the CAG200 ensures easy and safe machining with excellent grinding results.
