German machining centre manufacturer Burkhardt + Weber (B+W) has launched a new, horizontal-spindle model, the MCC 800, to sit alongside the smaller MCC 630 that was introduced in 2017.

B+W has incorporated the stiffness and power of its heavy-duty MCX range into the compact MCC models. In the case of the latest 800mm (optionally 1,000mm) pallet machine, it has created one of the most rigid and powerful metalcutting centres in its class for producing prismatic components weighing up to 2.5 tonnes including the fixture.

The 4-axis machine, available in the UK, Ireland and the Middle East through sole sales and service agent Kingsbury, includes a C-axis rotary table, twin pallets, a 1,400 x 1,200 x 1,400 or 1,600mm working envelope and a footprint of 8.8 x 3.5 x 3.8m. The MCC range is also the first standard machine in series production at the company’s Reutlingen factory in southern Germany, which until now has built machining centres to customer order.

The MCC 800 can deliver 1,300Nm of torque continuously if a 41kW gear-driven spindle is chosen instead of a 30kW/300Nm motor spindle. There is a further alternative of a +45/-110° tilting spindle of identical power that adds a fifth CNC axis.

Spindle speed is up to 6,000rpm, optionally 10,000rpm, and an ISO 50 tool interface can be specified instead of the standard HSK-A100. The tool changer, which has few moving parts and is regarded as one of the most reliable in the world, serves a tool magazine with 64 pockets that can be expanded to 320 on request.

Large diameter table and spindle bearings, widely spaced size 65 linear roller guideways and twin ballscrew drives in the Y-axis contribute to the machine’s stiffness, as does the generously ribbed, FEM-optimised cast iron structure.

Component accuracy is maintained even when taking heavy cuts in steel or titanium. High productivity is promoted by a cutting feed force of 17.5kN and 7m/s² acceleration to 60m/minute rapids in the linear axes, which are fitted with linear scales for feeding positional data back to the Siemens Sinumerik 840D sl control.

The single-piece bed casting allows rapid installation and commissioning, either as a standalone machine or as part of a line. B+W integrates a high level of Industry 4.0 monitoring and networking capability into its machines, offering comprehensive data acquisition and communication for efficient production, process safety and timely maintenance.
