Mazak supports young engineers in the Midlands

Yamazaki Mazak has pledged its support to initiatives that promote engineering as a career for young people by offering work placements to a number of local students.

Worcester-based

One such initiative is the ‘Young Apprenticeship Programme', taught in the Midlands through the ContinU Trust secondary schools in the Wyre Forest and New College in Bromsgrove. The programme is aimed at 14-16 year olds and offers an alternative route through GCSE level education.

The first five students to complete the nine week placement gained important hands-on experience in a variety of different departments. Managers and experienced staff who worked alongside the young engineers reported genuine enthusiasm and a real understanding of the work they were undertaking.

Dr Damien Cleugh, European marketing manager for Mazak, commented: “Schemes like the Young Apprenticeship Programme in Engineering are of great importance to Mazak. We recruit new apprentices every year and these courses offer potential candidates a solid foundation in both theoretical and practical work, which can be a real advantage when looking to secure employment.

“Employing and training the engineers of the future is vital in maintaining growth and encouraging young people to undertake a career in engineering. The five youngsters who kicked off the new rolling placement initiative proved to be a true credit to the programme.”

Yamazaki Mazak is currently recruiting its latest intake of apprentices, who will start work in September. Many of the students who complete a work experience placement through the Young Apprenticeship Scheme will be applying for these positions.

Opting to follow an apprenticeship scheme over the traditional GCSE study path allows students to focus on a particular career option from a much younger age. The Young Apprenticeship Programme in Engineering incorporates three GCSEs in English, Maths and Science as well as an NVQ level 2 in ‘Performing Engineering Operations' which is equivalent to a further six GCSE grades.
