2019 was yet again a very prolific year for 3D measurement and scanning specialist Measurement Solutions (MSL), with several, new team members contributing significantly to this success.

“As we continue to grow, our philosophy is always to offer the right solution first, however, of equal importance, is ensuring we deliver best in class training and technical support,” explains managing director, Andrew Tagg.

“This was fully implemented in 2019, with the addition of a dedicated training engineer. Our 2:1 sales/support ratio provides us with a foundation for further product sales growth in 2020.”

To support continued rapid growth, the team has welcomed two new recruits. Charlotte Woodwards joins in the newly created position of marketing and sales executive and will be responsible for all aspects of marketing for MSL and will support the future growth plans.

“We specifically want to develop our digital marketing channel further in the coming months and we have some very exciting plans, aimed at showcasing specific solutions such as composite inspection and creation of digital training resources,” Ms Woodwards comments.

The Creaform HandyScan and MetraScan products in particular continue to drive the company’s growth year on year, penetrating a wide range of markets and applications. Specifically, the new HandyScan Black Elite launched in April 2019 with VDI/VDE certification and improved accuracy down to 0.02mm has made a big impact.

“The new product catapulted our potential in quality control scanning applications,” Mr Tagg adds. “It became immediately apparent, due to the increased demand for demonstrations, that we would require an additional account manager to serve the South of England and Wales so in January we welcomed Tom Pearce to our growing team of skilled engineers.”

Mr Pearce, based in Bristol brings a different dimension to Measurement Solutions: “We have a combined experience in metrology of 176 years,” Mr Tagg advises, “however, the new Creaform Go!Scan Spark has been developed specifically with product design and reverse engineering in mind.

“Tom is an automotive design graduate with years of experience in design and associated downstream workflows – particularly the conversion of scan data (point cloud) in to a finished CAD model. This combined with Creaform’s VXmodel software offers a seamless workflow into SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor and Solid Edge.”

He continues: “Measurement Solutions now has a perfect platform to engage with our customers to demonstrate and hopefully educate, end to end reverse engineering. For too many years I have witnessed poor processes and a lack of industry knowledge in converting scan data into useable CAD files. At Measurement Solutions we focus on the ‘solutions’ part – not simply a shifter of products.”

A further strategic move in 2020 sees the addition of a dedicated metrology specialist Majid Yaqub. Measurement Solutions remains qualified as an ‘Expert Level’ partner with Metrologic Group and maintaining status requires the capability to sell and train metrology software on all measuring devices: CMMs, portable arms, optical devices and robot measuring cells.

“The CMM market will be a focus for us in 2020,” Mr Yaqub asserts. “We have every skill set required to service, calibrate and upgrade existing customer machines. The purchase of a new CMM will always be an option; they remain the most accurate method of validating a component’s dimension – however, they also come with a heavy price tag.”

Manufacturing output in the UK has some big challenges in 2020, producing quality components whilst expectations of process improvements will only grow, but, without the guarantee of long-term contracts, this naturally stifles budgets and investments.

“A CMM upgrade or retrofit is a perfect solution to consider,” Mr Tagg concludes. “We offer all the benefits of a new machine – including the capability to run a Renishaw PH20 5 axis touch-trigger system, a Revo 5-axis measurement system or why not consider adding laser scanning capability onto the existing CMM as it’s the most accurate non-contact solution.

“All the above options offer a dramatic impact on inspection timescales. New controllers, bearings, and error mapping effectively brings a 30-year-old machine back to life at a third of the cost of a new machine.”
