Meeting energy demands

A North East company's investment in advance technology machine tools is set to reinforce its position as a first tier supplier to the global oil and gas market.

The Team Valley-based based Responsive Engineering Group has completed a £2.5 million investment programme in its high precision machining division, Exact. This investment supports the production of complex, mission critical components and assemblies used in oilfield exploration and production applications.

The expansion has added five new sophisticated Mazak multi-tasking machine tools capable of carrying out high accuracy milling, turning and drilling processes.

The privately-owned Responsive Engineering Group has expanded from a turnover of less than £4 million in 2005 to an anticipated £15 million this year and the new investment continues a record of growth that has seen 40 new jobs created over the past two years, taking the workforce total to 165.

In addition, the installation of the new machines means that the company is now seeking to employ a further 10 CNC operators immediately as well as a range of project and engineering positions.

Peter Bernard, managing director of the Responsive Engineering Group, affirmed: “This investment is all about meeting the demands of our customers in energy related markets. Our core business is the manufacture of mission critical components and assemblies for energy sector applications, including subsea, where the highest product quality standards are applied.

“The new investment represents the latest available technology, giving us an exceptional machining capability with improved quality control, reduced product leadtimes and improved productivity levels.
“The expanded capability will not only help us to continue to meet the rigorous demands of our existing customers, but will also help to drive ourselves up the energy sector supply chain.”

Responsive already includes oil and gas engineering customers such as Cameron, Siemens, Schlumberger and Sulzer among its client list, manufacturing a range of components for ROVs well intervention equipment, drilling products, connection systems and gas turbines. Exports have also grown in recent years, with orders from the Far East, South East Asia, elsewhere in Europe and the USA, where the company recently secured a $1 million contract for the supply of specialist oilfield drilling components.

As well as an advanced machining facility, the company also operates specialist divisions for welding, fabrication, laser and water cutting, assembly, testing and pressing activities.
