A record intake of apprentices to join the MTC in 2020

The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) has said it will be taking on more than 200 apprentices for its 2020 intake, a new record for the organisation.

The apprentices will be trained in a wide variety of manufacturing disciplines from basic engineering to using some of the most up to date manufacturing technology.

Paul Rowlett, managing director of the Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre, said the MTC had gained a reputation for supporting the engineering sector with high quality apprenticeship training programmes.

He said: "Our purpose is to seed the manufacturing sector with a pipeline of capable engineering technicians. Our apprenticeship programme creates fully rounded, business ready, skilled engineers capable of giving employers a genuine return on investment and business impact, helping them become increasingly globally competitive," he said.

The centre was founded by the University of Birmingham, Loughborough University, the University of Nottingham and TWI. The MTC’s industrial members include some of the UK’s major global manufacturers.

The MTC aims to provide a competitive environment to bridge the gap between university-based R&D for innovative manufacturing solutions, in line with the Government’s manufacturing strategy. It is part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, supported by Innovate UK.

The Catapult centre houses some of the most advanced manufacturing equipment in the world, creating a high quality environment for the development and demonstration of new technologies on an industrial scale. This provides a valuable opportunity for manufacturers to develop new and innovative processes and technologies.

Established in 2015, The Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre is a training centre, next to the MTC, designed to help the next generation of engineers and technicians, equipped with the advanced manufacturing skills of the future.

The centre's apprenticeship scheme provides business-ready technicians and engineers for employers eager to grow their businesses and ensure a competitive advantage. AMTC apprentices have received specialist training with the skills to make an immediate difference in organisations.

Located at Culham Science Centre near Abingdon, OAS is a partnership between the UK Atomic Energy Authority and the Science and Technology Facilities Council. The two organisations have a history of apprentice training in science and engineering stretching back more than 70 years.

OAS offers training for the Level 3 Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standard, designed by employers to give the technical and practical knowledge required to work in the engineering sector.
