Multiple EMO developments for Horn

A wide variety of new tooling system developments is being exhibited by Paul Horn at EMO.

In the UK, the tooling will be available from Ringwood-based Horn Cutting Tools.

Key products include the innovative DR high speed reaming system, Series DD replaceable tip drills and the M310 narrow section disc milling system. Horn has also developed the fully API Spec. QI certificated HPT high quality end preparation system for oil industry pipework.

Horn tool systems for machining of oil field pipes and sleeves – such as System 117 – are designed for the end machining of rotating or stationary oil field pipes up to 25 inch diameter. The product range currently includes tools for external and internal turning of API and special threads, internal and external chamfering, machining sealing seats, grooving, parting off and peeling.

For EMO, Horn is showcasing a significant expansion of the System DD drilling tools, the user configurable System 313 ‘package' tool, the System 713 12-tooth groove milling range and a specialised range of tooling for machining alloy wheels.

Compared with the Horn System DD replaceable tip product introduced in 2010 the latest version offers significantly wider capabilities. It now covers hole sizes from 10mm to 20.5mm in 0.1mm increments whilst the range of cutter bodies has expanded to provide aspect ratios up to 7xD, in addition to the existing 3xD and 5xD tooling. Cutting geometries for steels, cast iron, aluminium and stainless steels are also available.

Features of System DD include through tool coolant capability and TA 45 coating of the cutter bodies to aid chip flow. In addition location repeatability of the tip clamping system is such that exchange can be carried out without need for re-setting. On trials and in day-to-day use, DD has proven to be a high performance system in terms of productivity, longer tool life and improved accuracy and surface finish.

The Horn System 313 tandem tool is a development based on the existing System 313 groove milling range which allows use of two cutters on a common shank to machine two parallel grooves and/or thread forms simultaneously. Standard separation sleeves measuring 5.7mm, 8.2mm and 10.7mm are available but the thickness may be customised by the end user by grinding down to as little as 2.5mm.

The forward and rear cutting inserts, separated by the sleeve, are located on the end of a standard System 313 carbide shank. Patented interfaces between the inserts and the spacer ensure reliable transmission of drive and secure location. Minimal entry bore diameter for using the tandem tooling is 22 mm.

The Horn System 713 is a significant advance in groove milling technology made possible by the latest tool grinding technology developed by Horn. These are 12 tooth cutters of 21.7mm minimum diameter, allowing access to bores from 22mm diameter or more. The smooth cutting action of the inserts is particularly useful for driven tool applications on mill/turn machines. The cutters have been developed for milling of grooves up to 4.7mm deep with widths of 1mm to 3 mm. System 713 inserts are designed for use with the vibration-damping M313 carbide shank. Initially they are being made available in Grade TI25 for machining standard steels.

Horn introduced its suite of tooling for machining automotive alloy wheels in 2010. Although based on existing holders and inserts the particular demands of wheel finishing has led to the evolution of a range of customised tools, some featuring PCD tips with laser-eroded chip forming geometry. Key considerations in the development of these tools were to combine long edge life with prevention of built-up edges, minimising formation of burrs and capability to produce a high standard of finish.
