Reinforcing its commitment to the aerospace sector and its position as a leading supplier of cutting tools and tooling systems to a wide ranging portfolio of aerospace customers, Sandvik Coromant will once again be exhibiting at the Farnborough International Airshow.

Located in Hall 4 on stand F11, the company will be promoting its expertise as a global solutions provider for engine, frame and landing gear machining tasks.

The solutions offered by Sandvik Coromant extend beyond cutting tools. As a manufacturing partner, the company provides support that includes information and advice on applications, manufacturing economics, recycling and value added training. The latter is delivered via Sandvik Coromant's network of 25 Productivity Centres around the world where customers can learn to maximise the benefits offered by the latest cutting tool technology.

On its 60m² stand at Farnborough, visitors will be able to discuss any specific machining challenges with the company's team of aerospace sector specialists. Sandvik Coromant is continuously developing new solutions to help aerospace manufacturing engineers meet the demands of materials such as heat resistant super alloys (HSRAs), titanium and composites. In fact, the company offers complete package solutions for all of these challenging materials.

For instance, regarding composites such as carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) and stacked materials with metal alloys, Sandvik Coromant has developed a new solution for reliable, efficient and high quality hole making in the form of CoroDrill 854 and CoroDrill 856 diamond coated solid carbide drills.

CoroDrill 854 with its spurred' geometry is preferred where splintering or fraying is the problem, while users will find greater benefit with CoroDrill 856 if delamination is proving to be the difficulty in resin rich materials. This is primarily due to its double angled geometry which allows soft entry and exit of the workpiece material.

Both drills offer optimum quality, process security and cost per hole economy when drilling composite aerospace structural components such as wing box, spars, stringers and skins.

New for the extreme demands of titanium milling are insert grades S30T and S40T. Both grades are available for use with a variety of CoroMill cutters in operations such as face, shoulder, long edge and high feed milling, as well as plunging, profiling and slot milling tasks.

Insert grade S30T combines the properties of a micro-grain carbide substrate with a wear resistant PVD coating enabling sharp cutting edges that resist fatigue and micro-chipping, offering machine shops longer times in cut at higher cutting speeds. S40T should be selected when challenging machining conditions are prevalent. It combines tough cemented carbide with a thin CVD coating to provide a grade that withstands vibrations and other difficult cutting conditions for longer times in cut.
