Sawing evolution

Founded by its present chairman Allen Peatfield in 1987, Saws UK has evolved into a leading metalcutting bandsaw specialist and bandsaw blade supplier.

The company acts as sole UK agent for a number of high quality European sawing machine manufacturers such as Klaeger, Pilous, Opus, and Fabris. It offers a range of specialised aluminium sawing machinery as well as a series of semi-automatic and CNC saws from Italian manufacturer Carif.

When Mr Peatfield started the business nearly 30 years ago, he realised that the humble sawing machine was often the ‘poor relation’ in the manufacturing process: “It was often the case,” he recalls. “I remember a time when saws were usually hidden away in a shed outside the main factory; one of my main objectives when I started the business was to get sawing back into the machine shop.

“At the end of the day it’s often the first operation in a manufacturing process and it needs to be carried out effectively and efficiently on a cost per cut basis. Today, Saws UK supplies a wide range of machines to suit most customer requirements and we’re more than happy to design, modify or adapt machines for special applications.”

A recent development for example is the use of horizontal bandsaws for removing 3D printed components from their respective baseplates. According to Saws UK, a semi-automatic machine fitted with special clamping is far more economical than using wire erosion methods.

“There’s literally no mess,” Mr Peatfield advises. “Many parts can be cut dry using the latest carbide tipped blades and more difficult materials can be cut effectively through using an environmentally friendly oil micro spray system.”

Celebrating three decades in the business, Saws UK thrives on finding clamping and fixture solutions on unusual shapes and materials: “We have had enquiries to cut everything from ice blocks to meteorites and we’ve always found the right solutions,” Mr Peatfield concludes.
