Solid performance

ATI Stellram will exhibit its latest cutting tools for aerospace applications, including its new RSM program for difficult to machine materials, at the Farnborough International Airshow.

The RSM solid carbide end mill tool offers a variable cutting geometry which is designed to overcome problems such as vibration and material tarnishing that are usually associated with machining titanium components.

Made from hardwearing, aerospace approved micrograin carbide, it has a sharply honed cutting edge with positive primary and radial clearance angles for achieving stress free penetration and good chip evacuation.

The RSM tool features a reduced shank for greater flexibility in reach and workholding lengths, making it ideal for profiling of walls, pockets and surfaces in 2D and 3D.

“As 60% of the cutting temperature remains at the cutting edge during machining of challenging materials such as titanium, it is vitally important to control speed, feed and engagement,” explains ATI Stellram's global aerospace manager, John Palmer.

“Thanks to the RSM tool's variable cutting geometry, engagement can be effectively managed so that the cutting edge is better preserved while issues such as galling and smearing are minimised.”

ATI Stellram will also display a selection of other programs designed for fast metal removal rates including the 5230VS chevron milling cutter, a roughing tool for profiling and slotting applications, and the versatile 7792VX high feed milling cutter for use on high temperature alloys and stainless steels.

The company, a business unit of ATI Engineered Products, will be appearing at Farnborough with ATI Aerospace, a market sector team responsible for integrating the products, technologies and manufacturing capabilities of Allegheny Technologies Incorporated – a global leader in speciality metals.
