Going with the motion

From track systems for robot automation, to heavy-duty systems for high loads, to a host of smaller components to perform simple or complex operations, HepcoMotion has a product to meet practically any requirement.

Developed to provide designers with a multitude of solutions, HepcoMotion looks forward to showcasing a selection of products at Southern Manufacturing.

For creative automation solutions, visitors will be able to see the GFX Hepco Guidance for Beckhoff XTS (eXtended Transport System). This solution utilises Hepco’s PRT2 and 1-Trak guidance systems to work with Beckhoff’s XTS circuit linear system to meet the needs of higher duty XTS applications where motion profiles and long-term durability requirements are particularly demanding.

The combination of technologies from Beckhoff and Hepco provides users with a robust, high production and flexible solution that will enhance production processes in many manufacturing applications.

This system is ideally suited to a range of applications such as a variable speed lane divider to sort randomly positioned items into separate lanes, or a double-sided system for a compact application that requires multiple motion profiles.

With Hepco’s experienced team on hand to discuss applications and product offerings, Hepco looks forward to meeting visitors at the Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre.

Maximising feed rates for high metal removal

Cutting tool manufacturer Guhring will be giving exhibition premieres to a number of new products that were launched at the end of 2019 on it stand.

The Birmingham company will be introducing its high-performance line of end mills and the latest addition to its extensive holemaking portfolio.

Visitors to Southern Manufacturing will have an opportunity to investigate the new Guhring RF Speed milling range that has been developed for the machining of very tough materials. The latest arrival, the new RF100 5-Speed and RF100 7-Speed solid carbide end mills have proven to take cutting speeds and process reliability to a new level and show visitors can discuss the opportunities with the Guhring team.

The increased tooth number of the five-fluted 5-Speed and seven-fluted 7-Speed generate high metal removal rates with stable process reliability, even when processing the most difficult-to-machine materials.

Providing high-performance roughing at high cutting depths, the two new ranges maximise feed rate parameters with high metal removal rates. As part of the highly dynamic Guhring Trochoidal Cutting (GTC) series, the new RF100 5-Speed and RF100 7-Speed are suitable for machining tough stainless steels, special alloys and a wide variety of steel and cast-iron grades.

Alongside the RF Speed milling line will be the new RT100XF; the latest in a long line of high-performance drilling products from Guhring. Branded as ‘Extreme and Powerful’, the new RT100XF has been developed to generate excellent feed rates and high metal removal.

Created to reduce cycle times for difficult-to-machine materials and special applications in series production, the new drilling line is said to be resilient to potential breakages. This bold claim is based upon the new carbide grade developed by Guhring for the RT100XF that performs a balancing act between hardness and toughness.

The design and geometry of the RT100XF supports the robust performance of the carbide grade and surface treatment with an early double margin support that perfects the coaxiality to ensure perfect bore size and roundness.

This makes the RT100XF the drill of choice for precision, concentricity and performance for hole making from 5xD upwards. Available in 5xD and 7xD, the new drills can be purchased in diameters from 3mm to 20mm diameter in 0.1mm increments. Furthermore, the series is also offered with all common imperial dimensions.

For manufacturers investigating the available cutting tools for machining composite materials, the Guhring team will be on hand to demonstrate and discuss some of the new products from the newly published ‘High Performance Tools for Machining Modern Composite Materials’ brochure.

Available to download from the Guhring UK website, the 24-page publication includes the latest solid carbide and PCD drills and end mills, taps, slot drills and PCD compression milling cutters.

With CFRP, GFRP and multi-layered FRP materials increasingly making an entry into a broad range of industrial applications, Guhring has evolved its product offering to meet the ever evolving needs of the market that ranges from the aerospace, automotive and power generation sectors through to marine, medical, sport and hobbyist.

The new publication introduces new and extended product ranges that includes solid carbide stub drills and Kevlar drills from 2.5mm to 10mm, the CR100 and FR100 geometry CFRP/GFRP end mills, ISO metric machine taps and 90 and 120° multi re-grindable PCD drills.

Additional products include the two, three and four cutting edge PCD slot drills and end mills with through-coolant. The new solutions are available with a wide variety of shank forms and tolerances, surface finishes and coatings, helix and rake angles and cutting edges.

The rise of the cobots

Mills CNC, through its Automation Division, will be showcasing its latest collaborative robot technology on its stand at Southern.

Two cobots are being exhibited at the event. The first, the M0617, is the largest cobot in the Doosan range in terms of reach radius (1.7m) and, at the event, will be performing a range of tasks that demonstrate its inherent flexibility and broad application potential.

The second cobot at the event features integrated vision technology which enables the cobot to identify and sort parts by size, shape, orientation and text pattern recognition.

Peter McCullough, product manager, Doosan Robotics says: “Doosan cobots are designed to perform a range of tasks that include CNC machine tool tending, testing and inspection – through to packaging, palletising, assembly and pick and place operations.

“The two cobots we are taking to Southern Manufacturing will demonstrate the undoubted productivity and operational efficiency benefits that can be achieved through investing in the latest automation technology.”

Doosan cobots are characterised by their build quality, safety, versatility and ease of use. They are equipped with 6-axis articulated arms with highly-sensitive torque sensors which detect any change in force or pressure, causing them to stop.

There are four different cobots in the Doosan range. Each has a different payload capacity and reach radius, and each is supplied with a state-of-the-art controller and sophisticated and intuitive pendant control.

All cobots can be specified with different end-of-arm tooling systems and solutions, and are backed by Mills CNC Automation's technical, and pre-and aftersales service and support.

Printing and machining collaboration

Matsuura Machinery will be exhibiting the MX-520 5-axis CNC machine tool and HP Jet Fusion 580 3D colour printer, working in harmony to demonstrate the real-world benefits of current production strategies being supplied to UK manufacturers from Matsuura.

Exclusively for the show, Matsuura will be machining live on the MX-520, utilising fixtures and workholding printed on the HP Multi-Jet Fusion 4200 3D printer, demonstrating the significant time and cost savings generated by ‘printing’ workholding in hours rather than waiting weeks, sometimes months, for conventional metal solutions to be supplied.

The MX-520 is Matsuura’s best-selling single table 5-axis CNC machine tool, aimed primarily at companies making the transition from 3- to 5-axis operations, although many of Matsuura’s established SME customers utilising the multi-pallet MAM72 series of 5-axis machines are also significant investors.

Visitors to the stand can also see live 3D colour printing on the HP Jet Fusion 580 and discuss the capabilities of this printer with the Matsuura team of 3D experts.

Roger Howkins, managing director at Matsuura Machinery comments: “As the UK’s premier applications and engineering led reseller of HP Multi-Jet Fusion 3D printers in the UK, our strength and depth of engineering knowledge in both additive and subtractive disciplines, and the real world benefits for metal cutting companies diversifying into 3D printing, will be clearly demonstrated at Southern Manufacturing 2020.

“The two machines we have selected to bring to this year’s exhibition perfectly highlight our commitment to providing quality, innovative and tailored solutions to enhance our customers’ production facilities. Our team of application engineers are busy creating new and exclusive demos, workholding solutions and fixtures which we’re excited to unveil in February.”
