A UK designer and manufacturer of fibre lasers is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, cementing its position as one of the world’s longest-established manufacturers of the technology.

The company has sites at two locations in the UK; Southampton and Rugby.

In 2000, Southampton Photonics, as it was originally known, was founded as a spin-off company from Southampton University’s Optoelectronics Research Centre, initially specialising in fibre optical components for the telecommunications industry. It went on to develop both pulsed and continuous wave (CW) fibre lasers under the redENERGY and redPOWER brands.

Over the last 20 years, the 50,000+ laser units deployed by SPI have been heavily involved in producing a myriad of everyday devices from some of the world’s leading brands; all from lasers manufactured at its facilities in Southampton and Rugby.

Mark Greenwood CEO of SPI commented: “It’s taken dedication and commitment to become a leader in the design and manufacture of some of the world’s finest fibre lasers, none of which would have been possible without being able to bring together some of the most creative and brightest minds in the business.

Our ethos of encouraging sharing and learning has resulted in some fantastic developments and a lot of fun along the way. I for one am looking forward to what developments the next twenty years will bring.”

SPI Lasers is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Trumpf Group. SPI Lasers sells its products globally, and has its major business operations, including research and development, and manufacturing, in the UK, with additional sales and customer support locations in Asia and North America.
