The British Turned Parts Association (BTMA) recently held a very successful member meeting at Liberty Steels in Rotherham with 24 companies in attendance.

“We hold three meetings per year,” explained BTMA president and director Phil Smith – who is also a director at precision subcontractor, Wealdpark. “The first meeting is usually at a venue of technical interest; and this year Liberty Steels were kind enough to host the event. Previous venues have been equally impressive – Renishaw, JLR Solihull, Morgan Cars and the AMRC.

“The second meeting, normally held in June, incorporates our sporting fixtures and is usually held at a hotel with a golf course. We have the meeting in the morning with a golf competition in the afternoon along with other sporting activities such as shooting, archery and go-kart racing. In the evening we host a dinner and prize presentation. It’s a great networking opportunity for all concerned. The third meeting – our AGM – is usually held in November.”

The meeting at Liberty Steels mainly focused on upcoming exhibitions, including the SID congress in Ireland in June and also member matters, with many reporting very healthy business levels. SID (Syndicat International du Décolletage) was created in 1963 to bring together national organisations representing the machining industry.

“The SID congress will be the first attended by the BTMA since the early 2000s,” Mr Smith stated. “We are looking forward to once again networking with our colleagues from around the world when we meet in Limerick in June.

“In the afternoon, we had the opportunity to tour the fantastic Liberty Steels plant,” he added. “Here we have a facility that produces engineering steels for our industry and it’s an excellent and very interesting facility. The company is dedicated to making British steel great again and is investing heavily in its future. Our members thoroughly enjoyed the tour and we thank Liberty for their time and hospitality.”

Stephen Kinsey, market development manager at Liberty Steels added: “I found the meeting informative and very encouraging as the market conditions appear to be favourable for the BTMA members.

“I got a first-hand understanding of the market conditions for UK machinists and a real understanding of what opportunities and challenges they were facing. The meeting showed that as a collective of companies they were all open and supportive of each other even though effectively competing in the same market space.”

The next BTMA meeting will be held on 11th July at Wychwood Park near Crewe in Cheshire. The date is a little later than usual due to the SID congress in Ireland.
