Still flying at forty

HB Bearings has given students from Huddersfield University the opportunity of 12 months works experience placement in its design department. The students are studying Motorsport Technologies BSc (Hons).

Jonathan Hogan, HB Bearings' technical manager says: “I have been very impressed with the high standard of engineering design principles and application of technology. Huddersfield University has given their students an excellent skill base and the 12 months industrial placement is a great way of advancing their knowledge.”

Graham Hirst, managing director adds: “I am certain that the work experience will lead to full time employment for these young people. Demand for our product has always been healthy and recruitment is high on our agenda at the moment to keep up with increasing product demand.

“Ten years ago our motorsport special bearings were mainly used in the transmission of racing cars, now bespoke bearings are used in many other areas of the car such as steering and suspension. These are new and very challenging areas for our design and production teams.”

HB Bearings has recently purchased positive material identification (PMI) equipment from Oxford Instruments. The X-Met5000 Premium Handheld XRF Analyser will be used to analyse the quality of material supplied and to identify alloys enabling accurate reverse engineering of classic motorsport bearings.

Next year sees the 40th anniversary of the founding of HB Bearings with a series of in-house events and other promotions planned throughout the year. The company will start spreading the word at Autosport Engineering 2012.

HB Bearings is a leading UK manufacturer of special bearings for motorsport and since its inception the company has built up a talented team of bearing engineers and designers. Types of bearings manufactured can be ball, roller, thrust, angular contact or even combination types. The designs can incorporate special flanges, threaded locations and non-standard sizes and can be supplied with ceramic components if required. Cages for bearings can be made to customer's specification using a range of materials. Modifications to standard bearings can also be accommodated.
