Two brand new machining centres will be promoted by Yamazaki Mazak at MACH.

The first, christened the Hyper Variaxis 630 is a high speed, high precision, multi-surface simultaneous 5-axis machining centre and the result of the design partnership between the Japanese machine tool manufacturer and the Ken Okuyama Design Co. The machine features a gantry-type construction with the fourth and fifth axes being provided by a high speed tilting and rotating trunnion table capable of rotational speeds of 50rpm in the A-axis and 120rpm in the C-axis. The axes are powered by direct drive motors with 4300Nm and 1800Nm of torque respectively. The design of the gantry reduces the overhang of the X, Y, and Z axes and, with the addition of the linear motors on these axes (tandem motors on the Y axis), traverse rates of up to 80m/minute are possible, while at the same time enhancing the accuracy of the machine and the quality of the machined components across its 630mm (X), 1100mm (Y) and 600mm (Z) axis travels. The spindle itself is a high power, high speed unit (35kW/168Nm/18,000rpm, with 30,000rpm an option). For more general purpose machining, with target customers operating in the general subcontract and automotive sectors, the Horizontal Centre Nexus 6000 provides advanced technology, high productivity and value from a competitively priced compact machine. Increased performance was at the heart of the design brief for this horizontal machining centre and Mazak has delivered improvements across the board. For example, spindle power has increased from 30kW to 37kW, rapid traverse rates are up to 60m/minute from 40m/minute and acceleration is up by 40% to 0.7G. Productivity is further enhanced by improved spindle acceleration, with the maximum spindle speed of 10,000rpm being achieved in three seconds, and chip to chip tool changes taking just 3.5 seconds. Users of the HCN6000 will also benefit from its large workpiece capacity, with a 750mm by 500mm rotary table which can carry components weighing up to 1,000kg and measuring 1m high and 900mm diameter. Axis movements of 800mm in XYZ ensure maximum advantage is taken of this load carrying ability. Ergonomics have also been addressed with the design of the HCN6000, with one example being the simple re-positioning of the control panel. In its new position, with the operator facing towards the front of the machine, it is much easier to see inside the machining area and when ‘driving' the machine manually, the machine movements (+/-) on the control are no longer the opposite of those on the machine, as operator and machine are in the same relative position.
