Sweet sixteen

With 16 machines on display at MACH 2010, visitors will see a representative selection of CNC/manual mills, machining centres and lathes from Devon-based XYZ Machine Tools.

With 16 machines on display at MACH 2010, fifteen on stand 5460 and a 1020 surface grinder on stand 5185 in the Grinding Zone, visitors will see a representative selection of CNC/manual mills, machining centres and lathes from Devon-based XYZ Machine Tools. There is, for instance, the first appearance of the XYZ TC320 LTY turning centre featuring a 100mm (±50mm) Y-axis capability, live tooling (up to 4,500rpm) and the latest Siemens 828D ShopTurn conversational control. This new 45hp/3,300rpm machine offers a maximum turned diameter of 320mm and a 550mm maximum cutting length within a compact 3,910mm (L) by 2,060 mm (W) footprint. Also new but with a considerably larger footprint is the XYZ CNC Oil Country Lathe, which weighs in at a hefty 14,000kg. It has a 410mm spindle bore and is fitted with a 40 inch four jaw chuck and a 32 inch rear three jaw chuck. Controlled by Siemens 840D ShopTurn CNC, the 3m bed length version on display at MACH is available ex-stock, with bed length options ranging from 1.5m to 5m and longer lengths available to order. The 558mm bed width of the 85hp large bore lathe ensures maximum rigidity during heavy-duty machining, with ‘vee and flat' bedways providing a large bearing surface that contributes to a high standard of accuracy and surface finish. It is supplied as standard with chip conveyor and auto indexing four-station toolpost, with the option of either an eight- or 12 station hydraulic turret. XYZ predicts that the new mid-range XYZ 1020 VMC will attract attention not least because it will be demonstrated in stripped down form. Visitors will be able to see every working part in action as the machine runs through a complete machining program, showing how the new Siemens 828D SL CNC interacts with every element of a modern day machine tool to provide the latest in direct drive 5-axis capability. The 20hp/8,000rpm machine is designed for serious metal removal, with its solid Meehanite ribbed casting and induction-hardened ‘extra wide' box slideways contributing to maximum rigidity and vibration absorption. Axis travels of 1,020mm x 540mm x 580mm (XYZ) are contained within a 2,650mm (W) x 2,105mm (D) x 3,020mm (H) footprint. Rapid feed in all three axes is 20m/minute and comprehensive tool management is provided by the new Siemens 828D ShopMill conversational CNC, which is fitted as standard. However, the machine being demonstrated at MACH 2010 is equipped with the Siemens 840D SL CNC that has the capability to integrate a full 5-axis in the form of an optional trunnion or tilt/rotary fixture located on the 800kg maximum load capacity 1,120mm by 500mm T-slot table. Also making its debut at MACH is XYZ's new SMX 2500 CNC/manual bed mill – a ProtoTrak-equipped machine that is the smallest model in a four machine ProtoTrak bed mill line-up. It is a compact 3hp (2.25kW)/50-3,500rpm machine but its 1,245mm by 228mm table can hold components weighing up to 400kg. The machine is equipped with the latest generation ProtoTrak SMX3 3-axis control and guarded to comply fully with CE regulations. An optional ‘TRAKing facility allows the operator to verify a program by using an electronic handwheel to wind the SMX 2500 through the program step by step. Finally, in Hall 5's Grinding Zone, stand 5185 will display the 2hp/3,000rpm spindle motor XYZ 1020 surface grinder, with 3,250mm by 2,400mm table, which is the smallest machine in the range. With a maximum grinding length of 1,050mm (longitudinal) and a 500mm by 1,050mm table/magnetic chuck size, the 10hp/1,450rpm spindle motor/3hp hydraulic motor XYZ 2040 is the largest of the four models available from XYZ, all of which are fully equipped and available ex-stock – and larger models of surface grinder can be supplied to order.
