Initially unveiled at MACH, Nikken Kosakusho Europe and Techicut have announced the launch of the TiTAN X-TREME – a new system designed to make light work of machining titanium and other exotic materials.

Using an all new X-Treme variant of the Nikken Anniversary type multi-lock milling chuck in conjunction with Technicut's TiTAN Rippa carbide cutter, those organisations needing to cut titanium with high removal rates will now be able to remove 267cm³ of material every minute at 2 x D with the TiTAN X-TREME solution.

Tested on titanium H6 at cutting trials staged at the AMRC, the impressive metal removal rate is only part of the story. Unlike other solutions this combination is able to take cuts of 50mm depth with tool life has been extended to over one hour and to as much as two with high coolant pressures.

According to Nikken and Technicut this is a marked contrast to the solutions that are currently available where tool life is as low as 15 minutes before the cutter needs to be sent for re-grinding and calibration of any complex geometry. With that process only being possible on three or four occasions it is clear to see both the production and financial advantages of using the TiTAN Rippa and the TiTAN finisher in the TiTAN X-TREME solution.

Tony Bowkett, group managing director of Nikken Europe stated at the launch that this landmark partnership between Nikken and Technicut had the potential to revolutionise cutting practices especially in the aerospace sector where there is a real focus on the use of titanium and other exotic metals.

Technicut's Mark Kirby was keen to stress that what they had been able to achieve in terms of performance metrics with the TiTAN Rippa had not been possible in other milling chucks that they had tested from other tooling suppliers.

TiTAN X-TREME is available in HSK100A and NBT50 formats. A C8 polygonal chuck is also available as an option for machining centres fitted with C8 spindles.
