Submissions for the 2017 edition of the Technology Design and Innovation (TDI) Challenge, the Manufacturing Technologies Association’s (MTA) flagship schools competition for young engineers, are now open.

There are four prize categories to be judged, two in each age group which are 14-16 and 17-19. Each age category has two prizes up for grabs for individual and group projects. The winner in each category will receive an individual prize (including iPads, GoPro cameras, Minirig speakers and drones) as well as a £1,000 voucher for their school to spend on design and technology (D&T) equipment for the classroom.

Laura Pickering, MTA education and development co-ordinator, said: “We’re really excited about starting to receive entries for this year’s TDI Challenge. There are a lot of talented students out there and this competition gives them a platform to showcase their hard work.

“We also want to recognise the hard work D&T teachers put in to support the next generation of young engineers and we feel the £1,000 prize for new classroom equipment will ensure these teachers are well placed to continue to be inspirational.”

The competition has been running for over a decade and is open to D&T students aged 14-19. The national competition encourages students to submit their existing coursework projects, which would go towards either their GCSE, A-Level or BTEC qualifications.

The group aspect of the TDI challenge is an expansion on previous years and allows group entries of three to six students in either age category. It is particularly suitable for University Technical Colleges (UTCs) and STEM club group work projects.

The TDI Challenge is supported by the Design and Technology Association.

Submissions for 2017 are now open and all entries must be received by 12th May 2017. An expert judging panel of industry experts will choose the 12 individual project finalists and the eight group finalists, who will be notified by 9th June 2017 if they have succeeded in being selected for the final judging day.

The final itself will be held at the European Headquarters of MTA member Yamazaki Mazak at its facility in Worcester on Wednesday 5th July 2017.

AUGUST COVER STORY: Up for the Challenge

Whilst the skills crisis in UK manufacturing is well documented, finding a solution is somewhat complex and convoluted. One thing’s pretty certain though – the inspiration to pursue a career in engineering or manufacturing needs to be instilled in students and teachers alike to produce our engineers of the future. As Dave Tudor found, the TDI (Technology, Design and Innovation) Challenge, organised by the Manufacturing Technologies Association (MTA) aims to do just that.
