The upgrade path

With many machine shops upgrading rather than committing to significant capital equipment investments, ITC now offers a range of Air Turbine Motor Mounts to improve the capability of robots, routing and deburring machines and turning centres.

The new motor mount units increase spindle speed up to 65,000rpm to improve productivity, surface finishes and machine capability.

Guaranteeing a constant high speed and torque under load, the new HD series of Air Turbine Motor Mounts is ideal for robotic finishing or machining metals, plastics, ceramics or composites. The HD series incorporates heavy-duty bearings within a rigid stainless steel housing that can easily be fixture mounted.

The series is available with four designations, with the 202HD with 3mm tool capacity being the smallest unit available. The 202HD is an oil free fixture mounted motor available with 30,000, 40,000, 50,000, and 65,000rpm speed ranges. With a long stainless steel barrel for rigidity and accurate fixture mounting, the 0.55HP weighs in at 0.28kg and is well suited for robot loaded metal finishing and plastic routing applications.

For customers needing to accommodate tool diameters up to 6mm, Air Turbine offers the larger 210HD series. With a long narrow barrel the 210HD has an extended reach for cavity and intricate machining applications. Available with 25,000, 30,000 and 40,000rpm options, the robust 210HD incorporates heavy-duty bearings that enable the 0.7kg unit to maintain a noise level below 67dBA whilst delivering a TIR collet accuracy of less than 0.03mm.

To simplify the machining of difficult materials, the 430HD unit features double front ceramic bearings and an ER11 collet. Combining these attributes with a rigid stainless steel barrel makes the 430HD ideal for hard material machining. This heavier and more robust unit offers a 0.88hp motor that holds tools up to 6mm diameter with a spindle speed of 25,000, 30,000, and 40,000rpm. Alongside the 430HD is the 430XHD, and with its more powerful 1.4hp motor has been developed for machine shops demanding a combination of increased speed and power to improve productivity times.

All units in the Air Turbine Motor Mount range have no gears or vanes to lubricate or repair. Reliable motors have fewer moving parts and need fewer repairs thus providing the end user with oil and maintenance free operation to offer a cleaner cutting action.

For turning centres, Swiss automatic lathes, robotic and fixture mounted applications, Air Turbine also offers its 700 series of mounted spindles. The powerful compact units are governed at 65,000rpm with power up to 0.8hp. With h7 Tolerance and mounting diameters from 25mm to 40mm the 700 Series is particularly suitable for marking, drilling, milling and finishing with high levels of precision.
