thyssenkrupp’s long involvement with the materials sector has been shaped largely by technological developments and structural change. In more recent times, the company has focused on digital transformation – part of which is the announcement of a new e-commerce platform in the UK, Steelbay Exchange.

Dr Laura Reder, part of the Digital Transformation Office at thyssenkrupp Materials Services, commented: “Digital transformation is imperative to harness the potential of disruptive technologies and integrate them into new processes, organisation models and ways of working.

“This necessity has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, so in July last year we announced the development of the first ever e-commerce platform in the UK, created with our own in-house technology and with the thyssenkrupp brand behind it – Steelbay Exchange.”

The new platform launched in the UK, via the thyssenkrupp Materials UK business unit, early in January 2021, showcasing the company’s ability to develop a fully functioning online shop in just seven months.

The UK business unit offers a vast range of products and a wealth of experience in sourcing and supplying products such as stainless steel, aluminium and mild steel. Its CEO is Terry Sargeant: “Steelbay Exchange is the online platform for best-in-class thyssenkrupp mild steel, enabling our customers to easily digitise purchasing and innovate their business for present and future success.

“With the digital transformation of our business, we achieve optimised networking in collaboration and optimal stock management. Our ultimate goal is to provide this advantage to our customers so that they can focus on their core business.”

The benefits that the Steelbay Exchange platform will bring to the UK mild steel market include easy-to-use online purchasing, available 24 hours a day, without the need to contact a sales representative. The products, featured on the platform, are all available off-the-shelf and delivery is within days. Smaller quantities are also offered in order to improve efficiencies in stockholding.

thyssenkrupp Materials Services is present in around 480 locations in over 40 countries and is the largest mill-independent materials distribution and service provider in the western world.

Its wide-ranging capabilities offered spans global materials distribution as a one-stop-shop – from steel, tubes and pipes, non-ferrous metals and speciality materials to plastics and raw materials – and tailored services in the areas of materials and supply chain management.

An extensive omni-channel architecture offers 250,000 customers worldwide round-the-clock access to more than 150,000 products and services.
