Tools of the trade

In addition to a rigid machine and fixture, a boring bar optimised in length and diameter is absolutely necessary to ensure a reliable hole making process.

The demand for producing deep bores has increased within the past view years. Heinz Kaiser AG has responded to the demands of the market by expanding its existing solid carbide bar program of diameters 19mm, 24mm, 31mm and 40mm for standardized bore diameters20mm, 25mm, 32mm and 42 mm with new bars of diameters 21mm, 23mm, 27mm and 29mm. For the boring range of 20-74mm diameter, Kaiser can now provide its customers with 24 boring bars with modular connections, meaning eight different diameters and three different lengths. To provide the best possible clamping of the boring bars, Kaiser has produced new collet chucks ISO 10897 (DIN 6388B) for tapers SK40/50 BIG-PLUS and HSK-A63/100. Kaiser collet chucks guarantee maximum clamping force as well as high run out accuracy and the dual contact tapers increase stability and therefore reduce vibrations. This is especially important to achieve good surface finishes in deep bores. When combined with precise finish boring heads, and a broad choice of inserts for all prevalent materials, the new boring bars and tool holders will offer peak performance, even under less than perfect working conditions, according to the manufacturer. In a totally different market sector, demands from watch and micro manufacturing companies for higher accuracy and surface finish quality has resulted in Kaiser unveiling the EWN 04-7 boring head – said to be the world's smallest. The EWN 04-7, with a length of 14mm and an outer diameter of 18.5mm is the ideal boring tool for machines with a spindle size ISO 20, HSK-E25 and larger. With a range of 0.4mm to 7mm diameter, the head is available with the CK1 modular connection or with a 10mm diameter cylindrical shank. Due to its compact build, low weight of 30g, and robust construction, the boring head is guaranteed up to 30,000rpm. Also available on the Kaiser stand at MACH, is the newly developed Kaiser CKN tool connection which is based on a three screw assembly with steel double pin connectors and solid aluminium extension tubes. Visitors will also be able to see the Preci-Flex interchange system that makes lathe tooling changeovers quick, accurate and economical. Heinz Kaiser
