TWI has taken delivery of a new large-scale 3D printer and laser cladding system at its laser cladding facility in Rotherham, Yorkshire.

The Trumpf 3D laser system was delivered to the TWI Technology Centre Yorkshire aboard four trucks and the main gantry unit has now been put in position ready for installation.

This follows the digging of a 4.5m long pit and the preparation of flooring for the system, which is unique in the marketplace.

TWI’s Dr Carl Hauser explained that this installation marks a key milestone in a nearly two year journey to strategise, tender, design and manufacture this ground-breaking new machine.

The TRUMPF 3D laser system will provide unrivalled capability in laser metal deposition (LMD), and was all made possible by funding through the OAAM project.

The system will expand TWI’s LMD capabilities and help to provide a world-leading LMD research and certification facility, with a particular focus on developing of large-scale repair and 3D printing of aerospace parts.
