The value of UK defence industry to the economy explained

The UK defence industry supports 260,000 jobs and the government spends £20 billion annually in the sector.

This is according to a Ministry of Defence YouTube video on the value of UK defence.

From an SME manufacturer on the Isle of Man building crucial F-35 equipment, to major employers supporting whole communities through major defence procurement projects, the UK defence industry’s impact is felt in every region of the UK.

Defence makes a significant contribution to the UK skills base by being one of the nation’s largest employer of apprentices and the positive impact of defence on UK science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) capability.

The work of defence also underpins the government’s industrial and economic strategies and continues to drive British innovation on the international stage.

The industry is also an export success with the value of equipment sales to the UK economy at £14 billion annually.
