UK steel industry supports 52,000 jobs in its supply chain

Following the release of trade body UK Steel’s Key Statistics Guide 2019, it has been revealed that the British steel industry supports 52,000 jobs in its supply chain.


Filled with the most recent data on the sector, this reference document provides an overview of the current domestic and global steel markets in a user-friendly format.

Key figures from the UK steel industry:


  • 32,000 people are directly employed by the sector

  • The average salary is 28% higher than the national average

  • £2bn is directly contributed to the UK economy from the industry

  • £1.5bn is positively contributed to the UK trade deficit via exports

  • 52,000 further jobs are supported in the supply chain from the sector

  • Future opportunities for the industry are valued at £3.8bn a year by 2030
