Vertically unchallenged

Sheffield-based CNC machine tool specialist Ward Hi-Tech is continuing to take a large share of the UK's vertical lathe market, the company claims.

Recent orders for HNK CNC vertical turning machines have included a model VTC 14/16 VTL with driven tools and a turning diameter of 1,600mm which will be installed early in 2010 by an established manufacturer of large valves used in the sugar refining industry, and a NT12/16 2-axis VTL with 1,250mm table size recently delivered to a northern-based specialist manufacturer of pipe flanges for the petrochemical industry.

Additionally, two further Hwacheon VT1150 VTLs with 1m chucks have recently been installed by a Yorkshire-based aerospace subcontractor to fulfil a newly acquired contract to produce high accuracy Inconel rings.

Ward Hi-Tech's UK sales manager, Mike Burke, commented: “It's pleasing to note that our strategy of developing a product portfolio of larger frame machine tools is bearing fruit. HNK and Hwacheon both manufacture high quality, heavy-duty vertical turning machines which are sold in large numbers worldwide. We now have an ever increasing installed user base of these established products within the UK and the positive feedback received from our customers is certainly helping to build more sales in a variety of sectors.

He continued: “Our ability to keep a rolling stocking policy also gives us a great advantage, enabling us to offer very competitive leadtimes and often providing machines from stock.”

The HNK CNC VTL range accommodates turning diameters ranging from 1,200mm up to 6m capacity and features auto tool changers as standard. Hwacheon vertical turning centres feature turning diameter's from 350mm to 1,150mm and are based around turret style tool changers.
