Compact cost-effective cutters

Tooling expert Walter GB has expanded its M4000 family of milling cutters with the new M4256, M4257 and M4258 porcupine cutters.

Like their M4000 counterparts Walter says, the new cutters produce cost-effective slot, ramping, pocket and shoulder milling, as well as circular interpolation routines on steel, cast iron, stainless steels and difficult-to-cut workpieces.

The savings in users’ production costs are due to a number of design characteristics. Of compact length (27mm to 77mm across the range), the new cutters operate at relatively low cutting forces and therefore reduced power consumption.

The resulting smooth operation reduces the tendency for oscillation and vibration, making the cutters ideal for unstable machining conditions. Also, the lower cutting temperatures lead to higher edge life.

Crucially, the cutters feature Tiger.tec Silver grade inserts and, with their advanced carbide substrates and micro-geometry designs, enable higher than usual tool rake angles to be achieved while edge strength and integrity are maintained.

In addition, the generous chip clearance encourages highly effective chip evacuation; especially on the flutes where chips cannot fly out to the side.

Available in varying diameters –20mm to 32mm for M4256, 40mm to 63mm for M4257 and 80mm and 100mm for M4258 – the cutters can be supplied with Weldon shank, modular ScrewFit interface and bore adaption.

Walter adds that with inserts already available for the M4000 high feed, shoulder, tee slot, chamfer and routing cutters – and the pending introduction of a 45° face mill and an additional shoulder mill range – it will be possible for most milling applications to be covered by one or two stocked inserts. This will lead to significant savings in users’ costs of inventory and logistics.
