Competitively capable

Tornos Technologies will be giving its new Gamma turning centre its UK exhibition debut at MACH.

The Gamma 20 lies between the Delta and the Sigma machines in Tornos' full range for complexity and promises an economic solution for the automotive, medical, electronics and general subcontract industries, enabling customers to produce relatively complex parts at a low capitol cost. The machines can be supplied with either five or six linear axes (the Gamma 20/5 and 20/6 respectively) as well as two C-axes. The Gamma 20 uses the same bar feed, collets and tooling as the Tornos Delta range and can be used with or without a guide bush to give the customer several advantages for short part production. With an integrated Fanuc 31i-A numerical control that facilitates ISO programming, the Gamma machines offer axial and radial drilling and milling, deep hole and inclined drilling, adaptation for profile bars, a long workpiece device and a motorized guide bush. The Gamma 20/5 allows simultaneous turning and rear end working with up to 35 tools including 11 rotating tools. As an option, the Gamma 20/5 can be fitted with a motor at the rear end to allow four rotating tools in place of the fixed units, taking the rotating tool total to 15.

The more capable Gamma 20/6 can be fitted with 39 tools with 15 tools rotating and has a Y-axis that offers increased machining capability in counter operations to eliminate the need for secondary operations and machines.

Both Gamma turning centres deliver a wide variety of counter spindle operations and the machines also enable the end user to utilise the vertical Y-axis on the counter operation post. Vertical numerical setting and machining movement for cross drilling or milling plus simultaneous working operations for cross drilling/milling with a rotating attachment is also possible.

The machines have a 3mm to 20mm diameter capacity with a fixed guide bush, a motorised guide bush or no guide bush offering a workpiece length capacity of 250mm, 210mm and 45mm respectively. The main and counter spindles both have a maximum speed of 12,000rpm.
