Digital adoption accelerated

Online metal supplier SteelScout has seen significant growth in new customers during the Coronavirus crisis despite the recent uncertainty and challenging market conditions.

The company credits the recent performance to the benefits of working with a digital platform and broad supplier network which means that highly competitive quotes can be assured as well as delivering a diverse and reliable supply chain, which has become essential since the start of the pandemic.

Managing director, Matt Yeates, observes: “Although it is generally recognised that B2B sectors have been slower to adopt digitalisation than their B2C counterparts, this has changed rapidly, accelerated by the Coronavirus crisis.

“As our own survey highlighted, many businesses have adopted new ways of working, often taking advantage of modern technology to facilitate remote working, flexible hours, video conferencing and more. And as a recent report by McKinsey stated, we have vaulted five years forward in consumer and business digital adoption in a matter of around eight weeks.”

SteelScout offers two multi-supplier platforms that leverage digital technology to connect buyers with a broad network of suppliers, giving them access to a range of highly competitive quotes. Both services are free to use for buyers and because they source quotes from a large network of distributors, buyers deal with only one supplier process instead of many.

SteelScout’s June survey showed that manufacturers wanted greater visibility of the supply chain and a more diverse supplier network. Karl Evans, head of operations at SteelScout affirms: “In times of uncertainty, one way for metal buyers to protect continuity of supply is to work with partners who are able to leverage the benefits of digital services to quickly adjust to rapidly changing market conditions.”
