Tooling expert Walter GB has announced that its new WEP10 cermet indexable insert offers two major advantages over coated carbide inserts for finish turning. The first is a doubling in tool life and the second no fluctuation in dimensional wear, which minimises the need for re-adjustment, for example, when making modifications to the component. Made from an extremely fine-grained substrate on a TiCN/CN base with an Ni/Co binder, the benefits are a result of the insert’s highly wear-resistant multi-layer coating. In addition, a special edge preparation on the cermet grade produces a glossy finished surface (at high and low cutting speeds) – particularly desirable for components that are visible, such as those used in car interiors, when a good surface value alone isn’t enough. WEP10 is suitable for stainless steels and cast iron as well as ISO P materials, and is especially useful for finishing parts such as drive shafts and gearwheels with a continuous or slightly interrupted cut.
