Using electron beams to generate precisely defined surfaces

Surfi-Sculpt is a new materials processing technology developed by TWI. An electron beam is used to change surfaces to precisely defined textures in a matter of seconds per cm2.

The level of precision allows the user to design customised surfaces for any application. TWI states some recommended possibilities as:

  • High aspect ratio features

  • Honeycomb structures

  • Hollow conical features

  • Multiple stage treatments

  • Fine-scale fins

  • Holes/slots with no burrs on the reverse
