New and optimised gear skiving function from Haimer

It is vitally important in the gear skiving set-up process to find the absolute centre of the skiving tool. With the tool off centre when cutting, it will be ‘pulled’ along the flank of the gear being machined, and the shape and size of the gear may change unexpectedly.

Achieving accurate synchronisation between the tool and the gear is of utmost importance to generate the perfect shape. If the shape and size is off, it could result in scrapped components. Nowadays machine shops run the entire gear skiving process on one machine – if it is equipped with the required technology package from the machine tool builder. For initial tool presetting, it is even more important to determine the correct tool coordinates.

The gear skiving option has been available for the Haimer Microset VIO Linear tool presetter since early 2016. Using this measuring function, specifically designed for measuring gear skiving tools, machinists are able to run tool presetting and measurement away from the machine tool and during non-production hours.

Recently Haimer developed this option further to take work away from the operator, optimise workpiece quality, and significantly increase overall performance and productivity. Haimer’s gear skiving option allows the user to find the correct data from the skiving tool‘s cutting edge with high repeatable accuracy and digitally transfer the tool data to the machine.

Provided with the right options on the presetter, a measuring macro can be created to automate the process so that all operators can run the presetter and measure complex tooling like a gear skiving cutter without the need for deeper knowledge.

With this option, the optical carrier (which includes a digital camera), can be swivelled by ±25° to adjust to the tool’s measuring points. This feature allows machinists to preset gear skiving tools in a completely new way and allows the machine tool to keep running, which increases productivity.

This innovative technology can also measure standard tooling assemblies and then send the tool data to the machine. Thus, the Haimer VIO linear Microset tool presetter is truly inclusive. Its versatile technology will be valuable to all shops that are gear skiving on their mill/turn machines, but also for machine shops that just need to preset their tools efficiently.
