From its Cheltenham factory, its experienced staff operate 45 hones operate on a daily basis with three machines specifically designed for handling work in excess of 8m long. In practice, the capability of honing long tubes from both ends allows bores up to 15m in length to be machined with an h8 tolerance from end to end. Tooling is available to hone diameters up to 750mm.
“With this level of expertise and experience we are often called upon to salvage large components that have suffered bore damage,” says managing director, Charles Sanders. “This damage could be through corrosion or a more serious problem such as a seizure which could be honed in stages, removing only as much stock as is required to clean up the defect, often restoring the bore to a better than new condition.”
When salvaging long length, damaged components, Apperley Honing uses high accuracy ultrasonic gauging equipment to check wall thickness along the whole length, ensuring the strength of the component is not jeopardised by the removal of excess material.
