A Birmingham automation and smart factory specialist is celebrating its 30th birthday in style after securing a clutch of new contracts wins across aerospace, automotive, food and drink and healthcare.

Mechatronic Solutions, which employs 50 people at its Kings Norton facility, has secured £1.5 million of new orders to supply assembly systems for self-administering drugs, a robotic sensory test facility and new machines that will help companies assemble parts for one of the UK’s leading car makers.

This recent growth will see the company hit £7 million in annual sales in 2018 and underlines industry’s growing desire for robotics, automation and integration of Industry 4.0 into its manufacturing processes.

To mark its birthday, the firm hosted a special open day to give customers and suppliers the opportunity to gain an insight into its different solutions, including the standardised robotic platform from sister division Robopod.

Founder Richard Evans said: “When we established Mechatronic Solutions in 1988, we set out with a passion for developing advanced technologies that would make a real difference to our clients.

“We started on day one with a ‘right first time’ philosophy, which still underpins our thinking and development, ensuring high standards and an efficient approach to automation and new solutions for smart factories.”

He continued: “The transformation over 30 years has been remarkable. We’ve gone from a small start-up to a firm supplying blue chip companies in the UK, Ireland, Europe and Malaysia, working with big names including Rolls-Royce, Accord Healthcare and IAC.”

Special guests at the open day included Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands, who commented: “Mechatronic Solutions is one of the West Midlands modern-day industrial success stories, now with the vision of moving into the fourth industrial revolution with product and service advancements that will enhance their customers’ capabilities for the digital age.”

Industry’s move towards digitised factories represents a major opportunity for the business and more than £1 million is invested annually in R&D work, ranging from new additions to its Robopod suite of products to digital twinning and closer integration of artificial intelligence into daily manufacturing functions.
