New precision levels for large scale measurement

The new Creaform MaxSHOT 3D is now available from UK metrology specialist Measurement Solutions. The system is said to offer the highest level of measurement accuracy and repeatability on large parts from 2m to 10m.

The handheld MaxSHOT 3D measurer can be used by inspection and quality control departments for dimensional inspection of parts, as well as product development teams that wish to reverse engineer sizeable products. It is aesthetically and ergonomically designed for ease of use – within the sophisticated system is guidance technology and user friendly software that makes it ideal for users of all levels, even non-metrology experts.

For manufacturers that consistently work on large scale projects the system is claimed to give complete peace of mind. It gives users the ability to measure with an accuracy within 0.015mm/m, significantly improving process efficiency and measurement consistency.

The unit comes with a photogrammetric camera and VXshot processing software from Measurement Solutions making it simple to use. It allows engineers completely new to photogrammetry to quickly and easily generate a high accuracy positioning model of an object based on a series of photographs. The handheld device has multi-function buttons on the body that enables the operator to interact with the software without having to return to a laptop.

The system is designed to make photogrammetry as simple, accurate and error free as possible. This also makes it convenient for smaller jobs such as benchtop measurements, jig and fixture certification and other smaller parts.

The device incorporates high-quality optics that claim to improve accuracy by up to 40% whilst a laser projected frame with a live go/no-go feedback visually ensures the operator is taking suitable images and measurements, eliminating the potential for error. This works in synergy with software diagnostic tools that suggest corrective actions during the measurement process.

Capable of direct measurements with optical probing accessories, the MaxSHOT 3D is ideal for tasks such as geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, hole and plane position and orientation measurement, surface profiles and edge locations.

For existing users of Creaform equipment, this adaptable measuring device can be used in conjunction with other Creaform products to achieve enhancements in the measuring range and volumetric accuracy of their existing portable CMM or scanners.

The maximum error when using the MaxSHOT 3D Next is equivalent to 0.015mm/m, with an average error as little as 0.005mm/m. When this is combined with other Creaform products, the end user gains significant improvements in volumetric accuracy.
